DApp stands for decentralized application which means that it does not reside on one platform like a centralized application (e.g., Facebook) but instead exists across many different platforms (e.g., Ethereum).

What is the difference between decentralized applications (DApps) and blockchain applications?

Centralized applications (applications hosted on one platform like Google Docs, Amazon S3, Dropbox) do not exist without the help of middlemen. This means that central platforms can change their terms of services or arbitrarily shut down their centralized applications at any time. There is also no assurance that the data stored on centralized applications is secure. On the other hand, decentralized applications (DApps) are built using open source software like Ethereum and do not rely on third-party middlemen like Amazon or Google. Decentralized applications are copies of themselves that exist across many different computers all over the world. For example, a typical decentralized application would have a copy of the application on every computer in the Ethereum network.

Blockchain applications are similar to traditional applications in that they run directly on a blockchain. In this case, blockchain applications do not need to use an intermediary for their computing needs because they can use the computing resources from the blockchain directly. Blockchain applications also cannot be shut down without shutting down the entire blockchain.
