Hello awesome people of steemit, hope we are all doing good. I am delighted to be moving on to my next task which is Achievement Task 3 after successfully finishing my two previous tasks. In this post, we will be discussing the menace of originality in written work which is plagiarism.

What is plagiarism?
I have personally understood plagiarism as the theft and representation of someone else's original work, be it in educational contexts like thesis, journalistic work like articles posted on news and magazine sites or graphical work like comics or posters on newspaper sites without giving credit or reference to the original source. According to Wikipedia,

"Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work.[1][2] In educational contexts, there are differing definitions of plagiarism depending on the institution.[3] Plagiarism is considered a violation of academic integrity and a breach of journalistic ethics. It is subject to sanctions such as penalties, suspension, expulsion from school[4] or work,[5] substantial fines[6][7] and even imprisonment.[8][9]." Source

Now you must have thought that was it is right? well, you are wrong, there are different types of plagiarism out there which will be discussed below.

Types of plagiarism
we will four types of plagiarism out there which are:

  1. Source-based plagiarism.
  2. Direct plagiarism.
  3. Self-plagiarism.
  4. Mosaic plagiarism.

They will be discussed further below.

SOURCE-BASED PLAGIARISM
This type of plagiarism refers to instances when misleading sources are involved. For example, the writer may have two sources of information but only reference one. Another form of source-based plagiarism would be when an author quotes a non-existent or incorrect source.

DIRECT PLAGIARISM
Direct plagiarism, also known as verbatim or copy-paste plagiarism, is an intentional and unethical form of stealing content. As the name suggests, the writing is stolen word for word and pasted into the new piece. The author then tries to pass off the content as their own. A word or two might be changed, but this type of plagiarism is too blatant to be considered paraphrasing.

SELF-PLAGIARISM
Also known as auto-plagiarism, self-plagiarism happens when you copy your own writing, whether intentional or not. Often the person in a self-plagiarism incident is summarizing or repurposing their own work instead of writing a whole new piece from scratch on the same topic.

Many people think self-plagiarism is harmless because you aren’t stealing from someone else. Just yourself. But, this type of plagiarism can be just as damaging as any other.

MOSAIC PLAGIARISM
With this type of plagiarism, the work of someone else is simply paraphrased without proper citation. It’s often difficult to detect because the plagiarized material is interwoven with many different sources, including the writer’s own ideas and perspective.

Here are some tips to avoid plagiarism

  • Always try and make your work as original as possible.
  • When you use the help of an outside source always give correct citation to it.
  • Never try and take credit for any work that is not yours.
  • When you are working on something always have it in mind about the different types of plagiarism because you may miss it.
