Achievement 3 by @hocus-pocus47 Task : Content Etiquette

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)
Hello everybody, I'm still on the quest of completing my achievements and due to some unexpected outcomes in my previous one my oomph was seriously dumped. It took me a while but I'm back at it. Funny thing though, it's the same topic I'm here to discuss today. Without further ado let's jump into it.

"Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work." source

To add to the textbook definition, plagiarism is simply using another's work, idea, phrase, image and what have you in your work without giving them credit which in turn becomes stealing. Now this gets done quite a lot with or without one's intention, nevertheless it doesn't change the fact that plagiarism took place. In many cases one might plagiarize without the intent to do so. One of such instances are seen in essays, one might need to get a definition or something down and in doing a quick search puts the results down and moves on. Someone like this would just want to get the info down so as to be able to proceed with whatever assignment as it was in my case like I said at the start of this.

Now I don't exactly think I have memories of my work being plagiarized before but I do know for sure that it sucks to have your efforts go unrecognized and it's even worse when recognition goes to another. Even though one might not have that intention, others who see the work will credit you and recognize you as its originator. Thus, it must be avoided at all costs.

Plagiarism is classified into 4 kinds. These are:
‣‣ Direct Plagiarism
‣‣ Mosaic Plagiarism
‣‣ Self-Plagiarism
‣‣ Accidental Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a criminal offence as it's prevents one from enjoying the fruits of his or her labour, but it's not the only reason why it sucks. It dampens creativity and shows unprofessionalism too.
By doing so, you are unable to express or grow your own creative genius. With professionalism I need not talk about it, stealing someone's work and clearly shows bad work ethics and this cannot be encouraged. It's not wrong to borrow another's ideas or expressions in your work but how it is used is what makes it an offense. In order to use another's work it's important to learn how to cite a source or simply Citation.

"A citation is a reference to a source. More precisely, a citation is an abbreviated alphanumeric expression embedded in the body of an intellectual work that denotes an entry in the bibliographic references section of the work for the purpose of acknowledging the relevance of the works of others to the topic of discussion at the spot where the citation appears." source

Citing a source clearly shows that one appreciates the work of others as credit is given to them, to the reader as well it gives credibility as it also gives the impression that one did not just make anything up on their own.
"Citations have several important purposes: to uphold intellectual honesty (or avoiding plagiarism), to attribute prior or unoriginal work and ideas to the correct sources, to allow the reader to determine independently whether the referenced material supports the author's argument in the claimed way, and to help the reader gauge the strength and validity of the material the author has used."source

Simple citing includes putting the text or sentence in quotation marks or paraphrasing it and adding the source.
