Achievement 3: Plagiarism as Submitted by @goodspeed22//19/04/2021
I highly appreciate this community for this task on Plagiarism. It has open my eyes on how to write professionally. I will no longer write in ignorance. Once again thanks for this superb enlightenment on plagiarism. Simply put, plagiarism is making use of another person's words, ideas, write-ups in my own writing without making reference to the original owner or without stating the source of my information, therefore, discrediting the owner.
This act is so alarming. According to a research study carried among 30,000 students, 16.5% consider plagiarism as a way of making a good grade in school. (Source from the link above).
These are ways that I can be invoked in plagiarism.
a. When I copy another person's idea and I failed to give the original owner recognition or I presented his writeup, words, etc as my own and I refused to put them in quotation marks.
b. If I used some texts or wordings from one source without quotation marks and citation. Besides, it can be inform of joining together duly cited sources of texts along with the uncited ones without giving credit to it. That is, without quotation signs or without writing the source material.
Also, if I changed another person's words or ideas yet use the sentence structure of the source and I failed to insert the source material close to it. I may as well give false information to source of material.
c. Another form of this punishable act is when I am paraphrasing. Paraphrasing from so many sources and put them together as one idea or I may present a work with proper citations without original content, that is my own brain work.
Meanwhile, I may cite my work as paraphrased but the work is solely based on the source text's original content. By doing this, I am still plagiarizing.
Paraphrasing text from a source without citation.
Three Ways That I can Avoid Plagiarism
- Acknowledgment: I want to give due recognition to source material by correctly citing the sources whenever I am using another person's work.
- Quotation: Inserting quotation marks when I am quoting from s direct quotes.
- Paraphrasing: Any time I am writing from another person's work, I will put them in my own words and give proper credit.
