in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)

Fellow steemians, I am here to present my Achievement 3 task

Before I write about plagiarism I would first like to share what I learned from The Complete Steemit Etiquette Guide (Revision 2.0) -Homage
The article contains etiquettes that will help guide users on this platform.

Meaning of etiquette in English
etiquette
noun [ U ]
UK /ˈet.ɪ.ket/ US /ˈet̬.ɪ.kɪt/
the set of rules or customs that control accepted behavior in particular social groups or social situations:
• Social etiquette dictates that men cannot sit while women are standing.
• Diplomatic etiquette forbids calling for the death of a national leader.

Here are some of the etiquettes of this platform from The Complete Steemit Etiquette Guide (Revision 2.0) -Homage

• Do not post and run. Don’t just post but help encourage other users by curating and commenting on their work.
• Avoid over posting as they may frustrate or annoy your followers, also, pay-out is reduced for more than 4 posts a day.
• Tag nudity or graphic imagery with NSFW (Not Safe For Work) to avoid the post being viewed by uninterested persons or flagged
• Don’t plagiarise or claim credit for others' work.
• Avoid Tag Spamming. Tag spamming is when you tag a post with a tag unrelated to the post.
• Don’t directly ask for votes
• Don’t expect your votes to be reciprocated.
• You’re likely to get flagged or lose followers if you bribe people for votes or resteems.
• Avoid using the wallet to get attention by sending steem to advertise yourself
• Don’t ever use #@all in a chat. Notification is sent to everyone and its annoying
• Don’t send direct messages to people you don’t know in a chat.
• Avoid flagging posts because you disagree with them, just comment your view.
• Don’t stalk or troll users online.
• Avoid criticizing people's posts unless you’re invited to.
• When you’re wrong, admit it and apologize
• Answer comments on your post.
• Share great posts you come across by resteming them
• Always read and understand rules in the community you are posting in.

What is Plagiarism

source

According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, to "plagiarize" means:

• to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
• to use (another's production) without crediting the source
• to commit literary theft
• to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source
source

Plagiarism means taking someone’s work and presenting it as a work of your own without giving credit to the original author or citing the source.

All of the following are considered plagiarism:
• turning in someone else's work as your own
• copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
• failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
• giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
• changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
• copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not (see our section on "fair use" rules)

However, not all information is supposed to be cited to avoid plagiarism. There are pieces of information that are known as common knowledge. Common knowledge is information that is widely known and can be easily confirmed. An example is, South Africa is a country in Africa. This type of information does not need to be cited.

Types of plagiarism

There are various types of plagiarism. They include using an entire document, rewriting a document, or copying and pasting parts of the document without citing the source.

The types are:

• copy and paste plagiarism: it is also called direct plagiarism. This is when a passage is copied and pasted without proper citation.
• Mosaic plagiarism: it means bringing phrases, passages, and ideas from separate sources to produce a kind of mosaic for other people’s work.
• Self-plagiarism: self-plagiarism is when you reuse part or whole of your own work which was done previously without acknowledgment
• Global plagiarism: this type of plagiarism is known to be the most severe type of plagiarism. Global plagiarism means using the entire work by someone else without proper citation.

Are media files included in plagiarism?

Using media files like videos, music, or image in a work without permission or citation is also considered plagiarism.
The following are some acts that are considered plagiarism in media.

• Copying and pasting media files from websites or sources into your own work without permission.
• Using copyrighted images or videos in a post is also plagiarism.

How to avoid Plagiarism

There are rules you can follow to avoid plagiarism

• Use quotation if you employ the exact phrase, passage, or sentence from a source in your post
• Summarise or paraphrase completely with words of your own if you want to write about an idea from a source.
• Always give proper citation when you either paraphrase, quote, or summarise someone’s work

How to cite sources

• a short citation of the source can be given somewhere in the post. A direct quote should be in quotation marks “” or referenced using mark up >
• a list of full reference can be given at the end of the post using reference link- #[source](link of source)

How to check your post for plagiarism

There are some free plagiarism tools online that can help to detect plagiarism in one’s work. Examples of these tools are:

smallseotools
plagiarism.org
grammarly
copyleaks

I will be using smallseotools to demonstrate how to check for plagiarism

Go to google and search for small seotools plagiarism checker. Then select small seo tools

Scroll down the page and find the content box, copy and paste document then scroll down a little bit more, tick the “I am not a robot” box, and select check for plagiarism

The results for my document are here and from their analysis, the document is 13% plagiarised and 87% unique.

I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them.
