Hello fellow Steemians, the contents of achievement 3 are a very interesting. The guide talks about plagiarism and also some of the ways to avoid plagiarism.

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

Plagiarism is simply known as the act of taking someone else’s work or ideas and making them yours without giving proper credit to the owner or source. Plagiarism can also be seen as a fraud because it involves stealing someone’s work and also lying about it.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

There are different types of plagiarism, and I will highlight 4 kinds of plagiarism. We have; Direct plagiarism, mosaic plagiarism, self-plagiarism, and accidental plagiarism.

Direct Plagiarism: Direct plagiarism is when a person copies someone else’s work word for word without citations or the removal of quotation marks. This type of plagiarism is very harmful and unethical and the owner of the original content can take serious actions against the plagiarist.

Mosaic Plagiarism: Mosaic plagiarism is an author’s original work is paraphrased and copied without giving credits to the owner. In this case, plagiarists try to change some words of the copied work by using synonyms or word spin.

Self-Plagiarism: This kind of plagiarism is mostly seen in schools. This is when students copy and paste part or whole of their previous academic work and submit it. The student has then submitted two similar papers for different courses or projects and so this action is considered self-plagiarism.

Accidental Plagiarism: This type of plagiarism is mostly by accident, that is when the plagiarist had the intention to give credit or cite the work he/she has taken but he/she misquotes the phrases or parts of the text and does not cite the source correctly. This is still considered plagiarism.

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM

  • Cite and quote your sources accurately: You have to always cite other people’s work, ideas, and phrases you have used directly or indirectly in your work.

An example is;

"Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude." ~Thomas Jefferson. Source

  • Use plagiarism checkers: There are lots of plagiarism checkers available to us these days. People should use these checkers to check the originality of their work to prevent any form of plagiarism.

  • Ensure originality: Researching for answers or ideas from external sources is essential but you should make sure to write the ideas you find in your own words to prevent plagiarism. You can also cite and quote words or phrases to give more emphasis to the owner.
