What is PLAGIARISM??

According to the famous American Merriam-Webster Dictionary, plagiarism means “to steal and pass off ideas as one’s own, to use another person’s production without crediting the source, to commit literary theft, to present as new and original – an idea or product derived from an existing source”.
source .
Plagiarism is just plain daylight thievery of an authors work without any reference.

Common types of Plagiarism

● Direct Plagiarism; this is committed when a person uses word for word another persons work and fails to use quotation marks and proper citations
● Self Plagiarism; this is committed when a student uses paragraphs from their previous work without citations or permission from the appropriate professor.
● Mosiac plagiarism; this occurs when a student uses phrases from a source without quotation marks or finds synonyms for the authors language while using the same general structure.
● Accidental Plagiarism; this occurs when a person neglects to cite a source or misquote a source.

Plagiarism in Academics

In the school system and academia in general plagiarism can be seen at it’s peak, where we have students, researchers etc using sources without citations for a class project or assignment. Plagiarism by students, researchers or professors is often seen as an academic dishonesty and this can ruin one’s reputation. The act of plagiarism is a slap to the face of the content owner.

How to Avoid Plagiarism

Plagiarism can be avoided by following the simple steps below
● keep track of the sources you consult for your research, so as not to loose track and commit accidental plagiarism .
●Always paraphrase or quote from your sources and endeavor to add your own ideas all the time.
●Credit the original author, citations are a must when using the work of an author, it cannot be over emphasized.
●Always use a plagiarism checker before you proceed to submit your work.

A Citation Example

Fiction is a way to live countless lives, an escape from reality. “Fiction is any creative work (chiefly, any narrative work) consisting of people, events, or places that are imaginary—in other words, not based strictly on history or fact”source

The statement above has one original statement

Fiction is a way to live countless lives, an escape from reality."

The next sentence is copied directly from the source and pasted and as such placed in quotation marks;

”Fiction is any creative work (chiefly, any narrative work) consisting of people, events, or places that are imaginary—in other words, not based strictly on history or fact”"source

In conclusion, plagiarism is a despicable act and it is always frowned upon and most times met with severe punishments, it both ruins a person reputation and stand with the general public and as such writers and authors should always check and cross check to avoid any form of plagiarism.

I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them.
