Hello Steemians...

I hope the steemians are always healthy and can do activities as usual. I have already completed Achievement 2, and now I will continue to Achievement 3. Talking about "Content Etiquette", it is closely related to plagiarism, copyright infringement, academic dishonesty etc. And on this occasion, we will discuss about plagiarism.

What is Plagiarism?
Plagiarism is taking essays, opinions, and so on from other people and making them look like their own compositions and opinions.

There are several definitions of plagiarism according to experts:

  1. According to Lester, plagiarism is expressing the words or opinions of others as our own.
  2. According to Silverman, plagiarism is writing facts, quotes, or opinions obtained from other people or from books, papers, films, television, or tapes without citing the source.
  3. According to Ismet Fanany, a person is guilty of plagiarism not only if he simply copies other people's books or articles, but also if he copies other people's ideas or expressions used by other people.

Plagiarism can be considered a criminal offense for stealing someone else's copyright. In the world of education, perpetrators of plagiarism can receive severe penalties such as being expelled from school/university. Perpetrators of plagiarism called a plagiarist. In short, plagiarism is stealing someone else's work.

What's Plagiarism Like?

Plagiarism is an act of theft, especially when the idea or work is someone's copyright. However, a plagiarist can commit plagiarism intentionally or unintentionally. How come?

Smart Buddy must have guessed, here. Intentional plagiarism is done consciously regardless of the purpose or motivation of a person doing it. Meanwhile, unintentional plagiarism is usually done due to lack of knowledge.

Therefore, there are various categories when a work/image/form can be said to be a plagiarism or imitation. Quoted from Deepublish, acts of plagiarism theft can be in the form of:

Total Plagiarism
Total plagiarism occurs when someone completely plagiarizes another person's work, then admits it as his own personal work.

Partial Plagiarism
A work/image/form can be said to be a plagiarism or imitation when only part of it is taken from someone else's work. Writing scientific papers is prone to partial plagiarism. Examples of plagiarism in scientific work, for example, when samples, theoretical foundations, or analytical methods are taken from other people's scientific work without writing down the source.

Auto-Plagiarism
Auto-plagiarism is done when we copy-paste our previous work into the current work. Of course, this plagiarism is done without mentioning the copied work as one of the sources.

Interlingual Plagiarism
Interlanguage plagiarism tends to occur in written works. An example of plagiarism between languages is when someone translates a written work in a foreign language, then writes it in Indonesian without mentioning the original source.

How to Avoid Plagiarism?

Not Plagiat.jpeg

Because the meaning of plagiarism is closely related to theft, we should not do it, my friend. Especially in scientific writing, plagiarism is an act of theft that we must avoid.

Quoted from akupintar.id, The examples of plagiarism that are quite often found in the writing of scientific papers include:

Using the services of others when working, modifying existing works, citing without mentioning the source, and recopying previous works. ✨quotes✨

So, to avoid plagiarism, we can:

1. Quoting
We quote when we take words or sentences from books, articles, or other written works. We rewrite the words or sentences in the exact same way as referring to the guidelines for writing scientific papers.

2. Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing or rephrasing can also be one way we avoid plagiarism. When paraphrasing, we describe or rephrase a piece of writing in a different word order without changing its original meaning or meaning.

3. Summarizing
Rewriting one page of writing into one paragraph does take practice. However, summarizing can prevent us from committing plagiarism. Still, don't forget to mention the original source, buddy.

Well, we already know more about the meaning of plagiarism and examples here. It's better from now on when we make works on https://steemit.com, whatever it is, without stealing and plagiarism. After all, of course one day we have to write scientific papers that should be free from plagiarism.

"I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them".
