Originality as opposed to plagiarism is one of the ethics of research. Therefore to be a good researcher, one should ensure that he or she is able to present a plagiarism free work. In other words, to avoid plagiarism, acknowledge your source.

Moving to the definition of plagiarism, many dictionaries and people have tend to define plagiarism in so many ways which still narrow down to the same thing and meaning. Permit me to quote from a dictionary and also give a self explanatory definition.

Merriam Webster's online dictionary which says " to 'plagiarize' means to steal and pass off(the ideas or words of another) as one's own. To present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source." It also confirms that, "plagiarism is derived from the Latin word 'plagiarius' which means 'kidnapper'."

The term "plagiarism" in my own understanding can be defined as an act of taking someone else's
materials, works, books, ideas, etc and presenting them as if there are yours.

  TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

There are four types of plagiarism namely; Direct, mosaic, self and Accidental Plagiarism.

  1. DIRECT PLAGIARISM
This kind of plagiarism is also known as 'copy and paste' plagiarism. As the name implies, it is a situation whereby one decides to copy a person's work or steal a person's idea word for word without the use of a quotation mark.

  2. MOSAIC PLAGIARISM
This happens when a person gets information from different sources and bring them together without the use of quotation marks to acknowledge the sources.

  3. SELF PLAGIARISM
This kind of plagiarism mostly occurs with student. It is an act of copying or making use of your work (be it an assignment, term paper or a pr sentation) that was used for a particular course or subject for another.

  4. ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM
A situation whereby a work or material is discovered to be plagiarised accidentally is not a mistake because, the same consequences applied to other types of plagiarism when committed is applied to it as well.
An accidental plagiarism happens when one misquote their sources or ignores source citing.

CONSEQUENCES OF PLAGIARISM

  1. Copyright infringement

2)As a student, you might fail that particular course or subject .

3)You can be expelled from school or the particular group you belong to

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM
The most important way of avoiding plagiarism is by acknowledging and documenting your sources, which is the same thing as saying; quote, summarize or paraphrase someone else's works or ideas and also give credit to the original sources.

I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to keep to it for as long as I remain here on steem.
