Achievement 3 by @ebubennah | Task : Content Etiquette

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago
Hello steem family, I'm excited to partake in the achievement post series. The lesson taught by @cryptokannon explained the content etiquette adopted on the steemit platform, and in this post, I will be responding to the assignment given.

The Steemit blockchain rewards its user with a steem token for curating contents of interest, it's only right that emphasis is laid on Plagiarism.

Plagiarism

As defined by Google is

"the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own."
Source

I define plagiarism as copying of ideas, text, or creative work, putting it out as one's work, without permission of the original author/creator in other words intellectual property theft.

Plagiarism also involves rearranging words of the original body of work to suit one's intent also known as paraphrasing.
All forms of plagiarism presented through written works, music, movie production are considered theft.

Types of plagiarism

There are many types of plagiarism and all of them are considered serious offenses which I believe is punishable by the law. The common types of plagiarism include:

a) Direct Plagiarism:

this happens when the exact content of someone's work is copied/used without citing the source and using quotations marks. This is rude and often called academic work dishonesty.

b) Self Plagiarism:

This happens when someone copies or use a part of their previous work without referencing the source/original work regardless of being the original author of both works.

c) Mosaic Plagiarism:

This happens when an author copies part of the content from different sources to form a new body of work without properly referencing all the used sources. The new body of work might be considered authentic but it's a mere patch of randomized ideas thus it's not truly authentic.

d) Accidental Plagiarism:

This happens when someone mistakenly forgets to cite their sources or poorly references the source text. It may seem like a permeable excuse but it's still plagiarism.

e) Paraphrasing:

This happens when an author rearranges words or uses synonym to replace words of someone else work.

Can Plagiarism be avoided?

In all honesty, nothing is 'new' but you can improve on some else's idea but still giving full credit to the sources of the idea 💡. Common practices like citation, referencing and quotation pass credit to the originators of the idea. Plagiarism is a serious issue and should be avoided at all costs.
I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them.

Thank you @cryptokannon and all leading curators in this wonderful community for this wonderful opportunity.
