From The Forest to The Temple of the Tooth

The Raja tusker was about 12 years old when it was captured in a jungle in the Eravur area of Batticaloa around 1925.This baby elephant was purchased by the Tikiri Bandara Mampitiya District of the Giragama Walawwa in Kandy and was later offered to the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy on July 31, 1937 with a deed of offering.

The Raja tusker which belongs to the 'Kumariya' caste, the highest of the many elephant species, had all the essentials that an elephant must have in order to carry the Ark of the Tooth Relic.

The manner in which the Raja elephants travel is glorious. It is said that the Raja tusker never shakes his ears while carrying the ark of the Tooth Relic. As a tribute to the Sacred Tooth Relic. It is also said that the Raja elephant is very intelligent. Each time the Tooth Relic carries, the elephant walks only on the floor cloth and never moves forward without the those cloth. It is also said that whenever people put the cloth on the ground for the tusker , he would step on one corner with his foot and help the cloth to be laid.

Historical Footprint

The Raja elephant stopped suddenly near the Queens Hotel during the 1955 procession. No matter how much people tried to move him forward, the elephant did not move at all. As a result, the Nugawela Diyawadana Nilame came and spoke to the elephant, but the elephant growled and did not move at all.Upon further investigation, it became clear that Ransivi's belt tied to the elephant was loosen .If he had walked one step further, Rancivi's belt would have broken. After repairing it, the elephant began to move forward again in its usual majestic style.

In the year 1959 there was an elephant riot in the Esala Perahera. It has become famous all over the world. The people who came to watch the procession got scared and panicked and ran away. The other elephants were furious and only the Raja elephant remained very calm and guarded the relics.
