WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?
In my own understanding, the word plagiarism refers to the act of copying someone else's work and then presenting it as your own.
Plagiarism is an illegal activity as such, one needs to avoid it. Plagiarism also implies that the plagiarist is a fake and not original as such it ruins the person's reputation.
There are different types of plagiarism, they're are;
- Global Plagiarism:
This type of plagiarism is the worst of it all, because it is presenting another person's full work as your own. If you find yourself deliberately and directly copying someone else's work or text and presenting it as your own, you're committing global plagiarism. Source
- Paraphrasing Plagiarism:
This is a type of plagiarism that refers to the act of rephrasing another person's ideas in your own words without proper citation of the original owner/author.
Source
- Verbatim Plagiarism (Copy & Paste):
This refers to directly copying and pasting another person's work without attribution or citation of the owner.
HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM
As we have seen, plagiarism is something we all need to avoid in order to appear real and professional. So the question is, how do I avoid plagiarism.
Step 1: Study Your Subject Thoroughly.
If you have a topic or project you are working on, make sure to learn everything you can about that topic in order to avoid plagiarism.
Step 2: Write or Present Your Subject The Way You Understand It.
Do not try to be someone else. Be original, and write or present the subject in your own language and people will like you for it.
Step 3: Make Good Use Of Citation.
Always try to cite the source of your content, sentence, or paragraph if you are not the original thinker.
Example 1
All our dreams can come true only if we have the courage to pursue them.
Example 2
"All our dreams can come true only if we have the courage to pursue them." Walt Disney
Which of this two examples made good use of citation? I'm sure your answer is same as mine. That is example 2. So those are my 3 steps to avoid plagiarism.
Now that we've talked about plagiarism and how to avoid it, let's talk a little bit about citation.
WHAT IS CITATION?
In my own understanding, citation refers to mentioning the original source, thinker or author of the content, sentence, quote or paragraph you're sharing if they are not yours. This helps you to become more reliable and trustworthy.
HOW TO DO CITATION
There are different ways to do citation. You can use quotation marks "" to cite a quote and then including the name of the author at the end of the quote, like in example 2 above.
If you using a picture you downloaded from the internet in your content from website's like; Unsplash and Pexel
Make sure you include the link of the image below it in your content. This makes your content look professional.
Always include the source of the image, phrase or sentence you used in your content if it is not yours.
Conclusion
There are a lot of work required of you if you want to up your content creation game. But when you follow the tips and guides above, it will make you a better content creator as a steemian.
Don't forget to study your subject or topic before creating contents on it, this will help you to avoid plagiarism.
