What is plagiarism?
In my own terms, plagiarism means stealing someone's content or work. It means presenting someone's work or ideas as your own without proper acknowledgement. When you lift from someone else written ideology and thought without adding citation, it is know as theft and hence, regarded as plagiarism. The major problem in writing is plagiarism as it is tagged as cheating. Plagiarism is a highly punishable offence.

Types of Plagiarism

There are different types of Plagiarism but in this article, I will discuss just five types, and they include.

DIRECT PLAGIARISM

Direct Plagiarism is occurs when a writer copies an author's work word to word without giving credit or writing it in quotation. This is the most severe form of Plagiarism. It is also know as a deliberate plagiarism, the writer deceive the viewers by copying someone else work without proper acknowledgement.

PARAPHASING PLAGIARISM

Paraphrasing simply means rewriting the ideas of an author in your own words and presenting it as your own work. It is also one of the most common types of Plagiarism. Without the addition of citations, even paraphrased content also becomes plagiarised.

SELF PLAGIARISM

This is one of the most common and easiest kind of Plagiarism that is done by writers and students. Here, the writer tries to mix parts of previous works to the new one. It is dishonest to represent your previous work as a new work because you have already got credit for it earlier. In order to be safe from self Plagiarism. It is important to cite your own ideas and work.

MOSAIC PLAGIARISM

It is also known as incremental Plagiarism and patchwork plagiarism. It occurs when the writer copies and paste ideas, phrases and quotes from multiple sources in order to produce new content. It comprises of slightly changing the structure of the paragraph, words and phrases.

ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM

Accidental Plagiarism occurs when the author of an article or a blog, mistakes two different pieces of information by different author's and forgets to cite them correctly. It is important to cite sources correctly. Source

To avoid Plagiarism, always endeavor to follow the following rules:

  1. Before writing organise your sources; carefully keep track of your sources from the beginning of your research. Most times people commit Plagiarism because the mostly forget where an idea came from and unknowingly present it as their own. But when you keep track of your sources, it makes it easier to check where a phrase, idea and facts is found.

  2. Ensure to quote and pharaphase correctly.

  3. Cite your sources correctly.

  4. Ensure to use Plagiarism check before submitting your work.

CONCLUSION

Plagiarism is a very punishable offence and it should be avoided by all means. It can only be avoided by citing our sources correctly. With my understanding in steemit etiquette, I shall never be found wanting in this offence.
