Over and over again, the number one crime every user is told to avoid is committing plagiarism here on steemit. Because the steemit platform seeks to award users on creativity and proof of brain, we are all always advised not to engage in any form of content theft or plagiarism but as much as possible provide contents of our own.

What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism can be defined simply as the use of someone's work without permission or acknowledgement. Using someone's work without permission is theft and without acknowledgement is trying to tell readers you own the work. Plagiarism can also be called content theft.

Plagiarism is theft and as such a copyright offence. The original works of content creators is protected by the copyright law and its abuse by an offender is a punishable offence by law. To be clear, the use of someone's work without credit or acknowledgement is publishing someone else's idea or writing be it a whole paragraph, a book or just a sentence without citing the original creator as source.

What Are The Types Of Plagiarism?

Plagiarism are of different types which will be explained in the next paragraph. Generally, plagiarism can be seen amongst students especially in their assignments. Because some students are lazy and do not want to put in extra effort for good grades, they just go online, copy and paste someone's work as their own. Plagiarism is seen amongst writers and singers as well. The types of plagiarism I would talk about are listed below;

  • Complete plagiarism: This form of plagiarism involves submitting an already published work as your own. In this type, the only editing you make to the original work is the name of author by substituting it for yours.

  • Source-based plagiarism: This form of plagiarism is giving wrong references to your work. This form is done a lot in my school when we are supposed to prepare lab reports and give proper references. Because we are sometimes lazy and feel our teachers would not check, we just write and then add random references to our reports.

  • Direct plagiarism: Direct plagiarism involves copying a section of someone's work without citing or using quotation marks to mean the text is copied word for word.

  • Self plagiarism: This kind deals with using parts mostly important / significant parts of your own work for a new work. Some people are of the view that this is not plagiarism as it is already your idea however this act of re using your own work is classified as self plagiarism.

  • Paraphrasing Plagiarism: Involves changing words of someone else's work by just using synonyms and antonyms.

  • Accidental Plagiarism: A form of plagiarism where you are not aware that what you're publishing has already been used. This can happen amongst students when research is based from the same source. But since the law cannot know if you plagiarized accidentally or not, it is advisable to have proper knowledge on whatever you are publishing.

How To Avoid Plagiarism.

  • Giving proper cites to sources. Example of citing here on steemit is;

"While conventional search engines ranked results by counting how many times the search terms appeared on the page, they theorized about a better system that analyzed the relationships among websites.[24] They called this algorithm PageRank; it determined a website's relevance by the number of pages, and the importance of those pages that linked back to the original site.[25][26] Page told his ideas to Hassan, who began writing the code to implement Page's ideas".source

  • Avoid paraphrasing and the use of paraphrasing tools.

  • Make use of plagiarism tool checkers.

  • Using quotations to avoid direct plagiarism.

  • Try as much as possible to make sure you understand the content you're writing on so that you can use your own words.

"I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them".

Thank you.
