What is plagiarism

Plagiarism is simply the act of copying somebody’s ideas with or without their knowledge and presenting them as your own. It must be noted that plagiarism can be either intentional or unintentional. Either way it’s still plagiarism so there are ways to reduce the risk of involving in plagiarism.

The source of any materials that doesn’t belong to you must be cited properly so they don’t appear as your own ideas.

Tips for avoiding plagiarism:

There are some things we must apply to avoid plagiarism. These tips will also cover for unintentional plagiarism so we can be confident of our posts.

  1. Any source we use must be cited: Not citing a source means you’re presenting the the work as your own which is a form of plagiarism. Citing the source gives credit to the original author and also help members reading your work to learn more from the source.

  2. When using the exact words from a different source, use quotation marks(“”) to show that they’re not your own words. This clears the doubt of any plagiarism case.

  3. Redefine Information: let’s try as much as possible to redefine the information we get from a different source. Let’s avoid copy and paste and try to be creative in a way that will make our work unique. Let’s try to rewrite in our own words and cite the source in addition.

Plagiarism also comes in different forms and I’ll like to highlight some of the forms of plagiarism below:

Direct plagiarism:

It means transcription of someone’s content word for word without citing any quotations. This is highly prohibited in this platform and attract great punishments including expulsion.

Verbatim plagiarism

When one submits someone’s work verbatim without acknowledging the person publicly it’s called verbatim plagiarism. Copy and paste from an article without indicating the source is a verbatim plagiarism.

Self plagiarism:

This means submitting your previous work or mixing part of your work to make it look nice without any permission from your instructor.
Also submitting same assignment in different classes without any person from your professors is also self plagiarism. It is not accepted here.

Accidental Plagiarism:

Accidental plagiarism means when a person misquotes the cite intended. This also not allowed and it’s unethical as well.

Mosaic Plagiarism:

This means when a person borrows work from a different source without using quotation marks and try to find synonyms to the words whilst maintaining the the meaning and structure of the original work. This is also punishable on this platform.

Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing is when rewrites part of a sentence or paragraph in their own words. It means rephrasing of words in someone else’s idea.
Changing a few words in a writing doesn’t make it your own.

I have read and understood the steemit etiquette on steemit community and will do my best to embrace them.

Thank you.
