Achievement 2: @alendoreeij , Task: Basic Security on Steem

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)

Before I proceed with my achievement 2 task, I would like to say a very big thanks to Steemit and its team for creating an interactive platform which helps in bringing out hidden potentials in people, especially in areas of creative writings, educating others, performing financial transactions, knowing about cryptocurrencies, socializing with others and so on.

I have spent just like three weeks on this platform as a new user of this humble platform and noticed a lot of abilities and potentials that Steemit platform can impact on its members and subscribers. So once again a big thanks to this great platform.

Now, let us go to the scope and requirement of this post which is simply about:
BASIC SECURITY ON STEEM

As a well-known and an established fact among various people that anything ‘’precious’’ and ‘’valuable’’ without proper protection in this life is meant to get lost or stolen at any point in time whether sooner or later.

As a result of this principle of nature, security is a basic and an unavoidable aspect of our life and day-to-day activities and therefore should be given utmost priority and be taken as a primary assignment over other aspect of our life because everything that is protected is meant to last-long, serve its purpose, regarded as being valuable and even the owner of such a thing will have a peace of mind under normal circumstances.

Security is highly needed and sought for in the following aspects which includes: lives, properties, the communities we live, financial accounts, social media accounts and the world at large.

Steem Blockchain Ecosystem as a humble arena is not left behind in understanding the need for security and as such it caters for the welfare and safety of the accounts of its members. Following the above reasons we would get to realize that the need the for proper security cannot be overemphasized especially in areas of securing our funds, wallets, accounts, keys and passwords among others.

The need for adequate protection comes out obvious and clear when were lectured by @cryptokannon to safeguard our passkeys and likewise understand their specific usage is as important as keeping our account safe and tidy.

Moreover, it was publicly made known to everyone on the platform that loosing the ‘’Master Password’’ which I would refer to as ‘’the mother of all keys and passwords’’ is like forgoing the whole of the steemit account because it cannot be retrieved (recovered) when lost.

Conclusively, by pondering on all the aforementioned explanation and reasons we would arrive at the fact that, security is of significant importance in everything and not a matter of choice.

Now, let’s get started with answering the required questions of our achievement 2 task.

Question 1
Have you retrieve all your keys on steemit?

Yes, I have retrieved and recovered all my keys and kept them safe. They were kept offline to be precise because as a popular saying among internet geeks and gurus says that ‘’ anything kept online is prone to attacks and not always 100% safe from dangerous hands.’’

In order to get this done, I logged in to ‘’steemwallet.com’’, proceeded to the wallet icon and then went to ‘’Keys and Permission’’ section and finally input my master password to login and retrieve all my keys.

Question 2
Do you know each of these key functions and restrictions?

Yes, I know their functions and restrictions and I learnt it by heart because I knew that they were significant to the protection of my account.

The so-called keys are as follows:

Master Password:
The master password as I said earlier is the mother of all keys and passwords and it is simply the password given to a user by Steemit when signing up, which is also used to generate the remaining keys.

It could be very unpleasant and disastrous if lost, stolen or misplaced because it can never be recovered, loosing it is like loosing the whole of a Steemit account.

Being the mother of all keys and passwords, it can be used to give birth to (generate) all other keys and it should be kept and protected in a safe place advisably offline for maximum protection.

Posting Key:
The posting key is a regular key or simply put a day-to-day action key. Its major function is that, it is used in posting, commenting, upvoting and downvoting, following others, resteeming of posts, editing, joining communities and muting of accounts on Steemit.

Like I said above, it is a regular and an unavoidable key because it is often utilized in daily activities on Steemit platform.

Active Key:
Active Key is a little bit closer in priority to the master password due its sensitive usage on the platform.

Precisely, it is used for steem powering up and down, transferring funds, steem power delegations, voting for a worthy witness, converting of steem dollar (SBD), updating profile, placing market orders, selling funds to others.

So in conclusion, it is meant for sensitive and painstaking actions on the Steemit platform.

Owner Key:
The Owner key is of very significant importance and it should only be used when the circumstance on ground warrants its usage.

It is regarded as another most powerful key after master key dues to ability to change other keys including itself. It can also be employed in account recovery if a user observe some sort of third party interference on his or her account.

Memo Key:
This key is employed for encryption purposes, that is coding messages which is highly regarded as some sort of protection from dangerous and malicious hands.

It is mainly used for encrypting and decrypting messages precisely during transactions.

All the aforementioned keys and passwords must be stored properly in a secured environment because they are important and essential to a user account’s safety.

Question 3
How do you plan to keep your Master Password?

As every person of humble birth and good upbringing would never joke with its mother’s protection from evil eyes, so is the case of master password.

Like I said many times earlier and I will continue to say, ‘’master password is the mother of all password’’, so it needs and deserves utmost care.

In order to ensure its maximum security, I saved in several places like my laptop device, my flash drive, my external hard disk, I also printed on a paper and kept it among my credential files and saved it on my mobile device as well in an encrypted form.

All the following security measures were taken just to secure it offline.

Lastly, anyone that has been in crypto space before shouldn’t have much issues in keeping their master password safe because it is just like the twelve or twenty-four mnemonic phrases given to a crypto user after creating a wallet address and once these phrases were lost and the wallet account had been logged out, then access to such a wallet is gone forever. So the same idea stands as regards ‘’master password’’.

It is illustrated with a Blue circle above.

Secondly, I will click on it, a page will be shown containing my available STEEM token amount as shown in the image (webpage) below :

The steem token section is circled red above and the amount of steem token I am having as at now is illustrated by the Purple arrow, I clicked on this available steem then a dropdown menu appear, after noticing this I clicked on "Transfer" option among the options which is underlined with a Yellow line as shown above.

After clicking on "Transfer '' the page below was shown:

The image (webpage) above displayed my username (ID) and also it asks for the username of the user I intend to transfer my steem token to as indicated with a Blue arrow followed by the column of the amount of steem I wished to transfer out.

After completing all the above steps, I will finally click on "Next" button which is underlined by a Purple line in the image above to submit my transaction order.

Question 5
Do you know how to Power Up your STEEM?

Yes, I do and it is pretty quite simple.

First of, I will move on to my wallet as illustrated with the first image above, I clicked on it and the image (webpage) below showed up

2a (2)_LI.jpg

It can be noticed from the above image (webpage) that I have some little amount of steem indicated by a Black arrow but in case I do not have any steem I could simply go to any third party exchange of my choice and buy there by clicking on "BUY STEEM" button shown above in the image then I continue right from this step by clicking on my available steem token. When I did that a dropdown menu appears as it is shown above then I select "Power Up'' option on the displayed list which is indicated by a Red circle.

I clicked on Power Up button and the page shown below was brought up

3a (2).jpg

In the ''Amount'' column (indicated by a Yellow arrow) above I will enter the amount of steem token I intended to use in powering up and lastly I clicked on "Power Up" button which is underlined by a Green line as shown above.

That is all.

In conclusion:
I have carried out a lot of practice on the usage of all these keys including powering up of steem and transferring of steem.

I have also known in details the unique functions of each keys and their permission levels including the master password (mother of all keys).

Likewise, I was able to arrive at the need for digital (offline) and printed backup of these keys so as to keep them under maximum security.

I also absorbed from the lecture of @cryptokannon the need to understand the special function of each keys and how to use them appropriately in order to match their intended functions.

Lastly, following all these security precautions and measures made me to understand that I will be protecting my account from possible security threats and dangers.

Thank you very much everyone for taking out of your precious time to go through my writeup and God bless you all.

@cryptokannon, this is my achievement 2 task. Thanks a bunch for the fantastic lecture.
