Food and Nutrition


Food and nutrition are two interrelat concepts. We can say that feeding is the action of eating when we are hungry, while nutrition is a biological process that takes place within the organism that, to be carried out, it is necessary to have fed. In cases of fasting, the body is able to nourish itself by consuming its reserves to obtain energy.

What is nutrition? Nutrition is the organic process, by which food is processed by the body to get the macro and micro nutrients necessary to keep it well regulated. Micronutrients include vitamins and certain minerals such as magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and elements such as sodium and potassium, all of which are necessary to keep our body in good condition.

What is food? Food is the action of eating when we are hungry, it is related to food intake. These can be healthy as is the case with fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, eggs and whole grains, or not healthy as is the case with ultra-processed foods such as potatoes and industrial pastries.

The importance of eating a good diet

Eating an inadequate diet in conjunction with other factors can mean different risks to our health, which can range from suffering from chronic diseases, affecting the development of mind and body, among others.

The importance of food, for anyone, lies in being able to meet the nutritional needs required by the body to function properly, in that way a good state of health is promoted.

The body requires food to:

Heal or perform a recovery process.
Fight diseases and infections.
Avoid weight-related complications.
Grow and strengthen.

We cannot lose sight of the fact that eating healthy protects us from suffering from certain diseases. Be careful, eating healthy is not synonymous with exceeding or consuming more, since this can also have consequences in the body.

What should a proper eating plan look like to maintain health?

Have products from all three food groups, i.e. carbohydrates (sugars), fats and proteins (legumes, meats, dairy, etc.). When combined, the necessary nutrients are provided.

Take the appropriate amounts of food, without excesses. Ideally, they should be equal portions unless medical indications make adjustments to the diet.

Provide necessary intakes to meet the needs of the body and ensure that the body can carry out all its functions.

It must be suitable for the individual, by which we mean that it takes into account their age, sex, daily activity, medical history and body constitution.
