CONTEST/TOPIC OF THE WEEK NO53 / IS THE EARTH ROUND OR FLAT
Happy new month to you all..i am delighted to be here and my sincere appreciation goes to @slon21veka for hosting this interesting yet educative contest. Am glad am a part of it. Thank you for having me.
This contest tittle is the earth round or flat is always a subject of debate back then when i was in the university. I remember one of my lectures asked us this question while we were in our first year. He walked into the class and asked us this question. He didnt just stop, he said we should prove whatever choice we make, meaning if we say the earth is round we should prove it and if we think the earth is flat we should also prove it.
Today while scrolling down i saw this contest and i was like wow! This question again? I decide to engage myself in it. Seat back and read my points.
For me the earth is not flat. And like my lecturer said to us back then i would give you some points to prove that the earth is not flat. The earth is spherical(a geographical term), or round(layman's term). There are several proves to it but here are my points..
Time zone difference we have in some countries shows and proves to us that the earth is not flat. Do you know i have some friends and relatives living outside Nigeria, some live in UK, canada and even kenya. Sometimes when i greet them good morning, they tell me is not yet morning over there. The reason is because we have a different time zone which exist because the earth is not flat.
The earth moves or rotates round the sun, therefore when the sun shines on a particular part of the earth while its moving, the sun reflects its light on that particular spot. While the other part that of the earth that the sun does not reflects it light does not get light and this makes it dark. This also leads to us having the day and the night. So when the part that was reflected moves away from the sun, another part of the earth gets the light from the sun..this process continues.. So if the earth was flat the sun when it reflects on the earth, the light will be seen in all parts of the earth but thats not what we have.
This is my second point to show you that the earth is not flat.
Scientist has noticed that during eclipse of the moon, which is known as lunar eclipse, a shadow on the moon surface appears which shows that the earth is round because the shadow seen reflects as round patches of the earth. I guess if the earth was flat the shadow of the patches seen will not be round.
Another point to prove my point is the ships emerging view when seen moving on water, either on the beach or on sea. When u stand at a point to view a ship coming forward it appears to you as if the ship is rising out from the water gradually. And as u keep viewing it continues..this is so because the earth is round. If the earth was flat, when you view ships moving on water you would be able to see all its parts complete and at the same time but the case is not so.
With these points of mine i hope i have been able to convince you that the earth from my opinion is round and not flat.
Writing on this topic brought back school memories..
