All through history, alcohol has played a significant role in various cultures around the world. Alcohol is used by people to relax, celebrate, unite, and socialize. It's usual for adults to have a drink with friends at parties, weddings, or on the weekend. An excessive intake of alcohol makes one an alcoholic.

When can we say that a person is an alcoholic? Give reasons for your answer!

Let me start by explaining what alcohol is. An alcohol is a drink that contains ethanol and is produced through the fermentation of fruits and other sugar sources.

A person becomes an alcoholic when he drinks alcohol beyond controllable measures and is unable to stop the consumption voluntarily. Most often, this is coupled with daily drinking, drinking larger quantities than most, and trying to increase the percentage of alcohol per day.

I am a business lady, and I move out on the street every day. I see the way some family men sit out, drinking themselves to stupor. I presume drinking is not a do-or-die affair, but most people see drinking as a marathon where, at the end, a gold medal awaits them.

Being an alcoholic is when husbands no longer take on responsibilities but take up the beer palour to consume a larger quantity of alcohol daily as a responsibility.

An alcoholic is someone who suffers from alcoholism. Alcoholism is a mental obsession with consuming alcohol.

Do you think alcohol is a drug? justify your answer!

A drug is any substance that alters how a person's body and mind work; since alcohol fits in this description, then it's a drug.

Because alcohol, when taken, disrupts normal body functioning, it is technically considered a drug. The reason people think alcohol is not a drug is due to the name difference. It has been called alcohol and the other drug, so they feel it has no connection.

Alcohol makes someone uneasy and restless, while some people would say that they enjoy taking alcohol because it helps them forget their troubles, but that's a big lie because alcohol doesn't wipe off memories; it only makes one tipsy.

Someone walks in normally into a beer parlor, but on coming out, he staggers as though he was involved in a war; that is the alcohol working. Alcohol remains a drug because of its contents.

Can alcoholism be considered a disease? How to control it!

Yes, alcoholism can be considered a disease of the brain. Overconsumption literally changes the brain chemistry, and as the addiction to alcohol increases, the person must drink more and more to feel the same effect, hence damaging the body and the brain.

Those who are dependent on alcohol seem to drink at the expense of everyone around them—friends, families, colleagues, even their loved ones. The brain easily gets affected when alcholism is the case.

How to control it

Most times, controlling an addiction is difficult, but it's a gradual process that helps with reduction first, and then it matures to the next level. But there are ways that could help an addict take control.

• Stay away. Some people may quit and never have a glass of alcohol for a lifetime. For those people, a glass of wine regularly could trigger it back, and this time would be heavier. So the best thing is to stay away from a glass of wine.

• See a physiotherapist. Many people cut down on their alcohol without medical help. It is advised to discuss your alcohol intake with your family doctor before you try to change. Talking to a counselor could also be a helpful measure so that they can give you the necessary advice as trained people and support you when you feel you can no longer continue.

Is every drinker considered an alcoholic?

No, not all drinkers are alcoholics. "Drink responsibly" This saying is for the wise. You become an alcoholic when you drink irresponsibly.

Yesterday, I was in a discussion with my friend, and he asked why people drink so much that they forget the way to their house. I told him, firstly, that it's greedy to drink more, and secondly, that it's show-off time for some people.

Even one who drinks should be able to know their gage. I don't think people should just sit and drink without knowing when they should stop; that was why I said a long throat was just the cause, but mind you, every drinker is not an alcoholic.

I just love the way you choose to end this beautiful writeups. I've learnt a lot from this post of which I want to point them out. I follow your mastermind view that not all drinkers are alcoholic and that alcohol can be used as a form of drug. This is very true especially the beer, the bitter content in it is very good at times for stomach pain and the likes of them. In as much as this is a drug , we should control the way we drink it as too much of everything can become a disease.

I'll love to ask a question. What if you marry a man that loves drinking alcohol? How would you deal with him?
