Have you played the role of caregiver or do you know someone who has put it into practice? Tell us about it.

First of all, in order to do justice to this subject matter, I need to define the term caregiver and caregiving . A caregiver is one who is trained or compelled by circumstances or compassion to provide and render care, comfort, and well-being to another person who may be unable to provide care and comfort for him or herself.

There are as stated above some categories of caregivers. First, is a professional caregiver which includes nurses, midwives and matrons who had undergone training for a specified period and have acquired skill to give care . This care is given in exchange for remuneration and this people render care ranging from taking care of the sick, offering medical advice and even monitoring the sick untill the become well again.

The second of these caregivers is a circumstancial or compelled care giver. The compelled or circumstancial caregiver is one who renders and gives care as a result of prevailing circumstance like long-term illness of a loved one, physical incapacitation of a loved one or the debilitating health condition of an aging close relative. In this case, the caregiver must render this care because they may be no other available person to do it. He may not be professionally trained to give care but only trains him or herself to give care by taking care of this loved one.

Such care includes bathing and cleaning up an aged grandparent who may be suffering from stroke, taking care of an accident victim who may have lost a limb, taking care and nursing a baby whose parents is no more. These kinds of caregiving are foisted on someone who may or may not be trained to render this love and care but takes time and practice to do these roles.

Caregiving simply means the ability which includes the professional skill, the passion and the willingness to render these care when the need arises. One of the most important psychological disposition of a caregiver, is to be able to have compassion or empathy for the person who receives the care he is giving. Caregiving without compassion loses its human factor and becomes mechanical. Caregiving is all about a human being reaching out to another human, so as to exhibit that human extinct in other to create a universal love and brotherhood.

The greatest and the most noble way to reach out to someone is to give care to another human when the need arises especially when it is unconditional and voluntary. It is true that a professional caregiver must be paid but no amount of money can adequately pay for care given on the basis of compassion. A very good example is giving mouth to mouth resuscitation in other to save a life or making an effort to revive a drowning man or a man who almost drown by doing all it takes to ensure that he doesn't die.

I have done this role in the past. My grandpa was very ill and I was told by my parents to go to the village so I could take good care of him as well as take him regularly to checkups. On seeing my grandpa in his Ill state, I felt very sad and depressed because looking at his state of health, one can say that he needs care and attention.

I made everything possible to make sure that he survives this health problem as I regularly take him to the clinic for proper checkup and examination, feed, bath and give him his medication.

Do you think that caring for a sick person should be a team effort or the work of a single person?

Caring for a sick person should be a team effort, it should be made so because a sick man is both emotionally and physically sick and should be in the midst of family members. It should not be a responsibility of one person because an individual may not be able to adequately assess the emotional need of a sick family member though he might be taking good care of such a family member.

An individual at some point may be too tired to take care of a sick family member due to other responsibilities, that is why is pertinent to take care of the sick as a team because it might open the possibility of members of the family coming up with suggestions and provide resources to help the sick person recover not only physically but emotionally.

Teamwork can also bring the family together as a team and forge a strong bond within the family which assures the sick person that he has a family that can come together in united front to take care of him. When we walk as a team, especially in giving care, we learn feom one another, open up ourselves to new ideas, which may be valuable to us in future.

What qualities do you think a caregiver should have?

A genuine care should have the following qualities ;

  • He should be compassionate
  • He should have patience and the character to endure.
  • He should be observant
  • He should be kind and ready to offer hospitality
  • He must have the quality of selflessness

What advice would you give to a person who is performing this role?

One advice I can give to a caregiver is being patient. Sometimes, these people being taken care of can easily irritate the person offering the care and this means that anyone who do not have or lack patience and endurance cannot perform the function of a caregiver effectively.

I would advice the caregiver to never give up or relent in this role as it is a way to show love to humanity. A caregiver should learn to be patient and endure whatever he or she is going when taking care of a sick or aged individual. I believe the reward for this kind gesture is in heaven.

Conclusion

Caregiving is a role that can be carried out by anyone, though it is sometimes professional, but we should learn to carry out this responsibility when the need arises as it brings blessings to us. I am glad to be one of the participants of this challenge, I would like to invite @richy20, @chukwu10, and @paholags to also participate in this noble engagement challenge.

¡Saludos amigo!😊

Saludos
