Contest: The cure of leprosy
All thanks to @disconnect again and the admins of the #healthy steem community for the contest created. The presentation is about the cure of leprosy and it's history. So without further Ado let's get right into it...
Tell me a little, without technical words: What do you know about leprosy?
Leprosy is a disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It affects the peripheral nerves and the skin of the infected individual. It is a chronic infectious disease that means it can be transmitted from one person to another either by droplets or direct skin contact with infected person. If not treated, it can cause a lot of disabilities.
Does leprosy have a cure?
Leprosy has a cure although before the evolution of medicine, it was believed to be incurable and individuals with such infections were stigmatized. The cure to leprosy is a treatment made up of 3 combined drugs such as dapsone, rifampicin, clofazimine. Such a treatment is known as a Multi-drug therapy (MDT). The treatment is based on 2 types of diagnosis of leprosy and so they have different durations. For Paucibacillary (PB) case it's 6 months and for Multibacillary (MB) case it lasts for 12 months. This is because PB cases are not as severe as MB cases
Name a historical event and reflect on an action of discrimination
During the time of Jesus Christ, leprosy was one of the most important diseases and once infected by such a disease, it is believed that you have been punished and so they say you are impure and they cast you out of the city into the slums. That was the stigma levied on persons suffering from leprosy.
That concludes my presentation and I invite @mboma, @majerius to the contest
