The industrial revolution, particularly the word press invention by Chester Carlson, triggered the invention of the stapler. Without this evolution, we probably would have been discussing about other things aside from the stapler.
PS I do not know why staplers weren't called fasteners.
Actually staplers use staples to fasten the things so it is a device which is used to staple the things that is why stapler is better name than fasteners because fastening can be done with other liquid materials as well but staples are only pierce by the stapler to bind the things. It is a specific name but the fastener has a wide range.
