Tell your story#09 | Unexpected Adventure

Last Sunday, a group of 50 people from our housing scheme families went on a tour to explore the beautiful Matale Riverston area. We all had a great time on the journey to Riverston, which was full of stunning scenery and a quiet atmosphere. However, along the journey, we had to face unexpected challenge.

Riverston is another summit in Sri Lanka's Knuckles Mountain range that is well-known for its hiking opportunities. There are many excellent views from all sides of the mountain.

Because it was a long holiday weekend with Saturday, Sunday, and a Poya day, many were attended to Riverston. Therefore, the roads were congested with vehicles, and our bus could not reach the vehicle park. So, we had to walk more than one and a half kilometers in addition to the regular route to Riverston. But we began our trip to arrive at our destination eagerly. However, my group of approximately 15 neighbors, missed an important turn due to a lack of knowledge.

We were supposed to turn left at a junction at Riverston, but we went straight ahead, unaware of our mistake. We walked about 3 km enjoying the lush greenery around us, but we felt that we had some mistakes, because we hadn’t met any other travelers along the road. We tried to contact any member of our participants, but unfortunately, there was no cell phone coverage in that area.

With curiosity, we stopped a passing vehicle and inquired about the Riverston. We were surprised to hear that we had taken the wrong way and needed to go back another 3 kilometers to find the correct way.

By that time, we were completely exhausted, but we had no other choice than to walk back. I looked back to find some assistance and noticed a truck approaching from that direction. We decided to beg for aid because we couldn't walk any longer. Fortunately, the truck driver was willing to assist us and asked us to enter the vehicle. They were a family, with the mother and father in the front and their children in the back. Even though there was no seats for us to sit on, we all climbed up from the back, grateful for the support.

Finally, the truck brought us to the crossroads where we needed to turn, and we all got out, thanking them for their assistance. As the vehicles were not permitted on Riverston Road, we had to walk another two kilometers to our destination. Even though the time was 4.30 p.m. part of our group decided to walk forward as the Riverston was a very beautiful place to visit.

When we went forward, we met a group of people, who discouraged us, claiming that the environment was misty and not time to reach the mountain. As a result of their warning, the group’s original membership was reduced to five. However, as several of our participants were still staying at the top, we decided to travel till we met them. Because of the mist and darkness on the path, we were unable to identify one other. On our way, we met some of our members coming back, and they encouraged us to continue our journey expressing the beauty of the Riverston. As several groups were still at the Riverston, we decided to continue our way, even though the journey was hard and misty.

Finally, we accomplished our challenge and arrived at the Riverston. We were surprised to see the area with the misty and gorgeous landscape. To remember this surprise adventure forever, we posed for a few photos. Our adventure finally left us a story to remember and share.
