Beliefs by Sri Lankan rural folklore.
Every country, including Sri Lanka, has a unique rural folklore. Sri Lankan rural life has always been deeply connected with nature, spirituality, and various cultural beliefs. These briefs are frequently passed down through generations and have a significant impact on people's daily activities and how they interact with their surroundings. Even if modern society has moved away from some of these rituals, many people continue to practice them out of tradition or respect for their elders.
The most significant practice is to believe in astrology. They believe in astrology and follow its instructions when carrying out their rituals. Even educated people believe in auspicious time for making important decisions like starting new tasks, beginning a new building, getting married, or even naming a new baby. Most Sri Lankans, particularly village folk, attempt to avoid the Rahu period when they begin a good endeavor, leaving for a new house or starting a new job, believing it brings bad luck. They feel that the Rahu period is an unlucky time to begin any auspicious assignment.
Another important belief is spiritual with trees and animals. Certain trees, such as the Bo Tree (Ficus religiosa), are believed to be sacred. Therefore, people offer pujas to this Bo tree with respect hoping for a blessing or avoiding misfortune. Not only that, but some people believe that God or spirits reside in trees such as Jackfruit, Na, and Banyan.
Rural Sri Lankans believe that certain animals based on their behavior, bring them good or bad luck. For example, seeing a cat wash its face with its paws, or seeing two birds at the same time is considered an inauspicious sign. On the other hand, they believe that hearing the voice of a rooster crowing is good luck.
Another common belief is that coming across an empty container towards them is unlucky. They believe that their purpose is neither fulfilling nor successful if they meet such an empty container.
They believe that young ladies going out in the evening or traveling at night is inauspicious. Because they believe that the evil eye will catch them. Furthermore, they strongly believe in the "evil eye" and "evil tongue," believing that jealousy will harm them. To avoid such negative forces, they perform rituals such as water sprinkling, lime cutting, and blessing pujas. Among these beliefs, Set Kavi (blessing chants) and Vas Kavi (cursing chants) are particularly common. They seek good fortune and wealth through Seth Kavi, whereas Vas Kavi is used to cast curses.
Superstitions are an important part of rural folklore. For example, leaving for good work on Tuesday is regarded as unlucky. Furthermore, they regard Wednesdays and Saturdays as Kemmura days, and most blessings are offered on these days.
The rural folklore includes not only specific superstitions but also ceremonies and rituals to avoid bad luck. For example, they commemorate their first paddy harvest with rituals in honor of God as a thank for protecting them. Similarly, they believe offering pujas to Buddha and other deities during full moons will bless and protect them.
Some people still believe in astrology, while others do not, and rural Sri Lankans continue to practice these beliefs, even though urban society has distanced itself from many of these practices. However, many young people have abandoned these traditional practices due to modern education, exposure to global culture, and changing lifestyles.

Well, I don't believe in astrology has it as it goes directly against biblical wisdom and Scripture, which clearly states that "chasing after false gods is a sin".
