Welshie's tip for a quick flip - coins to cash??

This new 50 pence coin design has been issued as part of the 2020 Annual Coin Set, and the coin supporting "Team GB" at the Tokyo Olympic Games has quickly become the talk of the collecting world…

As the news broke that this year’s Olympic Games would be postponed until 2021, collectors were soon asking the question, “What will happen to the 2020 Team GB 50p?”

Despite being released at the start of the year within the Annual Coin Set, the coin is yet to be individually in to circulation or as a collectors coin. We now know that any individual release will be postponed, in line with the Olympic Games, meaning collectors will have to wait until 2021 for the individual release of the Team GB 50p.

So how will it be possible to profit from this?? That's an easy question to answer... Excitingly, this will mean that there could possibly and most probably be two versions of this coin to collect. One with the obverse dated 2020 from this year’s Annual Coin Set and one with the obverse dated 2021 for next year’s individual release.

The reverse, design by David Knapton, currently depicts the individual Olympic sports accompanied by the Olympic Rings, the Team GB logo, the inscription ‘TEAM GB’ and the date ‘2020’. But will this also be updated to reflect the new date of the Games to 2021???

This is the million dollar question, OK, probably not a million dollars but possibly hundreds.

Already, the 2020 version of the Team GB 50p is being listed on on a well known auction website for well over face value, as collectors rush to secure this version of the coin.

So how do you get your hands on one of these sort after coins?

It appears that collectors have been removing the coins from Annual Sets and selling them for over £35 ($44). In my opinion the demand for the 2020 version of the Team GB 50p is sure to be high, especially as it is only available as part of the Annual Set, meaning far fewer will be minted than if it were individually released. Since this is still a new coin, and word hasn't spread to the general public just yet, I am predicting big moves for this coin.

The Olympic 50p craze continues

Olympic themed coins are no stranger to the limelight… In fact, it was the 2012 Olympic 50p collecting craze which kick started many collector’s interest in the hobby. Since then an estimated 75% of these coins have been removed from circulation by collectors adding them to their collection.

Collectors, like myself, were also delighted in 2016, when The Royal Mint issued a special 50p to wish Team GB success for the Rio 2016 Games, considered by many to be the "unofficial" 30th Olympic 50p in the series. The coin’s obverse features a swimmer with the Team GB logo, the Olympic rings and the inscription ‘TEAM GB’. Designed by Tim Sharp, the coin has been officially endorsed by Team GB and celebrates the spirit of British Olympians – a must have for all Olympic 50p Collectors.

But now as the 2020 Team GB 50p takes centre stage, the coin collecting community has been sent into a frenzy once more. I’m sure that not only will Olympic 50p collectors, but all coin collectors will be really eager to secure this highly sought-after coin and will also be looking forward to the individual release of the updated version next year (hopefully).

So here's my tip for the quick flip

Head over to the Royal Mint website and pick up the 2020 collection for £55. In that pack you get all the coins the RM plan to release in to circulation this year. Split it open and sell individually coins on eBay, especially that gem of a 50p that is only available in these collectors sets.

Even if you sell the 50p alone for £40, there is still £10 worth of coinage you can spend in circulation regardless, but I have a feeling with the demand for "cash" dropping off a cliff edge, the amount of 2020 circulated coins will all be low mintage and command a premium in years to come.

If you are thinking of making this purchase, please contact me so I can send you a discount code to get you and I both £10 off our next purchase.

Very interesting!
I am a little far away from British coins and I only have those, like the Queen's Beast series, that I can buy on Canada/US. Or some silver bullion coins minted by the Royal Mint.
These Olympic coins make a wonderful collection.

These designs are beautiful, in a year of olympics, but despite moving the date of this great event and even a possible non-celebration this year, these coins would obtain an interesting value, again, beautiful designs, very well elaborated.
