The Native American Dollar coin series launched in 2009 to honor the contributions and accomplishments of Native Americans. Each year, a unique reverse design representing a different theme has been paired with the popular obverse design featuring Sacagawea.

The reverse design for each year is to be emblematic of one important Native American or Native American contribution. To the extent possible, the design themes are to be issued in the chronological order in which the Native Americans lived or the events occurred.

The theme for the reverse design of the 2013 coin was “Delaware Treaty of 1778".

The reverse design for this year commemorates the Delaware Treaty of 1778, which was the first written treaty between the United States and a Native American tribe. After declaring independence, the United States signed a mutual defense treaty with the Delaware that would allow American troops to pass through the Delaware Tribe’s land to attack the British fort at Detroit, Michigan. The treaty also recognized the Delawares as a sovereign nation and provided the option of joining with other tribes in the Ohio region to form a state.

Proof coins were also minted and this is the scope of this series. All are PF-70 UC graded by NGC. As with all modern proof coinage, the coins feature a cameo finish with frosted raised design elements and mirrored background fields.

The coins were made of 88.5% Copper, 6% Zinc, 3.5% Manganese and 2% Nickel and their weight is 8.1g.

NGC graded 4,214 2013-S $1 "Treaty with the Delawares" Proofs, with 2,063 as PF-70 UC. 802,460 coins were minted in San Francisco.

I bought this coin in 2013 for $27.11 and today's price is around $60.00.

The reverse design of the coin shows a depiction of a turkey, a howling wolf, and a turtle. These animals are all symbols of the clans of the Delaware tribe.
The reverse was designed by Susan Gamble and engraved by Phebe Hemphill.

The obverse design, featuring the portrait of Sacagawea and child, was designed by Glenna Goodacre.
