An Inspiration by @thekittygirl’s post of her awesome 1987 Portuguese 1 Escudo post and @silversaver888’s Escudo post I am pleased to post this under their great shadow for today's #worldcoinwednesday!

Juan & Christopher, The first return voyage home

Evening, February 1493 aboard the Spanish Caravel, the Nina.

Another wave swamps the bow of the Nina sending volumes of more water pouring onto the ship. The masts, rigging, and hull of the Caravel strained, creaked and complained as the storm lashed but she didn’t give in to the elements. The Steersman cursed the rough waves knowing that the crew will struggle double time to keep her afloat.

“Steady as she goes, steer her ten points starboard into the next wave.” Captain Martín Alonso Pinzón seemed to relish the challenge of sailing stormy seas, and at this point any large wave could potentially capsize the ship at any time. He had to take charge.

The Nina was a medium sized Caravel of 21 meters meant for navigating the much quieter Coastal and river trade routes along the western coastline of Africa with a good seasonal foray into the open ocean making supply runs to the Islands as weather permitted.
This evening the large treacherous waves pitched the ship up and down in almost regular intervals as the wind ebbed and blew erratically but still with an Easterly bearing.

Men from Santa Maria fit in as best they could to manage ship operations without getting the way of each other. Some of the men were ordered to rest as best they could as may be needed to relieve those exhausted in what may be a prolonged storm. The rain continued to pour down in sheets making life miserable for everyone on the open deck.

In these conditions losing men overboard was a concern, once overboard the unfortunate soul will simply be lost and not much can be done. Several men clung to the port side rail when the ship pitched to the left. Some men were not able to keep their modest meal down. One man stood out, the Admiral Columbus, his head hanging over the port side rail.

Seaman Juan, former Captain of the Santa Maria steps through the cluttered and crowded deck as the Nina pitches again to the starboard, “Capitan Pinzón, we just lost sight of the Pinta’s lamps about ten minutes ago!”

Martín Pinzón still respected the former Captain of the lost Santa Maria and clearly understood the circumstances they worked under, “We must assume the Pinta is still there. Keep watch for Vincente. He’ll be there.” His brother Vicente Pinzón was a capable Captain of the Pinta and was just as skilled in navigating severe conditions. “And how is the Admiral?”

Juan gazed over at Columbus still hanging his head over port side. There was a loud belch followed by a barely audible moan despite the rolling capricious wind and waves. “He’ll be better in a few minutes more, any further orders?”
Captain Pinzón looked Juan in the eye, “You deserve better than this my brother Juan but he is the Admiral, just keep watch of the Pinta where she should be, I will have someone relieve you to rest in an hour.”

Juan replied, “Yes sir!”

The ship depicted on these coins is a large caravel of the late 15th Century distinguishable by the forecastle, sterncastle and Square rigged masts. Originally descended from Portuguese fishing boats it is an improvement over the earlier Caravels retaining much of its maneuverability and speed. Capacity of 60 to 75 tons .The length of the Caravel is 39 to 59 feet.

This design made this upgrade more ideal for trade as earlier versions lacked space for cargo and crew. The Nau or Carrack version was the larger than the Caravel. The Santa Maria sailed by Christopher Columbus is a 100 Ton Capacity Carrack while the Nna and Pinta were 60 to 75 ton Caravels.

Note: 5 Escudo - Numista described the ship in error as a Caravelle rather than Caravel.

So awesome!!! I love ship coins..silver coins! I am glad to see once again your channel bars. How about if we showed our channel bars in one of our posts... like simultaneously, hehehe. We have different choices in silver, but we do both love our vessel coins! I think I got that from you and Vessel!
Have a beautoful day sis, @kerrislravenhill. Take care 🥰🌺🤙and a million Hugs and Kisses 🤗💕💋!

I have both our MKBarz channel bars.
And you did show them in a post already as can remember.
My precious Silver Vessel bar that will always remind me of Big Lory when I see it has toned dark since.
I have yet to show that. Then which bars? So will it be under the #silverpornsaturday or what tag?

I always thought these coins with the ships were pretty, but you really made them come alive with the story in your post! Great job! 😃

I like to imagine being in the thick of History, as I read plenty of those pulpy Historical romances. For a while I've indulged in this form of Escapism to cope through tough times and developed quite an imagination.
I still plan to write a little fictional story with each piece of Pirate Silver I acquire.
My longer term project and goal is to mass a fleet of silver ship coins.
However there are so many non-silver ship coins out there, it is a big challenge to acquire even half of them.
I know because I have a copy of the 2017 Krause world catalog of world coins. It is huge.

A very entertaining way to show some coins and one possible history behind them.

I make sure and try not to contradict known facts about what is already established history. Anything else, like controversy or unknown I will can fill in with juicy fiction.
Hollywood is so known to run roughshod over history and so I take to doing the research before indulging in Historical Fiction.
I may just take a good theory and run with it.
My Imagination just gets going at times.

Very nice. I have one of those on its way to me already. Its coming from overseas so who knows when.

Thanks @silverd510. I recall getting these on Ebay but I can't remember where they were geographically from. But I love the adorable ships on them and that they were silver.

I can see these Silver coins being carried in the pockets of the men on board these sailing ships!!😀
Can you hear that one......as it fell to the deck with a ring!!!🤗

But where do you spend it in the New World and the Mid Atlantic? Lol, I bet some of the crew end up gambling it away during the long weeks of travel or simply save it until they are back home.
The wages are established basic Military service wages as set by the Spanish monarchy and paid for by the crown. Any of the gold found wold be claimed by the Crown with 15% going to the Governor of the discovered lands, and that was Columbus. There were incentive bounties but by and large the average seaman didn't get shares in any riches found. But I'm sure there was a chest of Silver to pay the crews aboard the Ships and the sounds of dice as well as the ring of coins.

I can see Captain Jack Sparrow in the thick of it!!!😀

Great to see you back even if it is just to read our articles and blogs.
You are likely aware that the Steemit had gone through a few Forks since you were last active.
Some good changes, some not so good.
Traffic/ membership has gone down since the Crypto-apocalypse but some of us are sort of beyond the value of Steem and more into the Social value.
But I like this platform as it allows me to practice my Fiction writing and bring my coins to life that way.
And one day publish a Coffee table book of CHRONICLES of THE BLOODY RAVEN.

Excellent all the way around! I love your stories brought to life in the way that you tell them and further illustration with a pertinent coin! Awesome, @kerrislravenhill!🤗🤗😎🤗🤗

To think this started out as Bed time pirate stories for little silver Stackers and big silver Stackers too. Thanks for Commenting @elizabethbit

Awesome coins! I'm particularly fond of coins with ships on them. I get sea sick easily, so dont' make a good sailor, but still love the ships.

I am particularly fond of my little fleet of ships on Silver coinage, as I've already posted most of my favorites.
Ships on coins are a common feature on many different currencies like Rwanda which is almost land locked from the sea so go figure when they released the famous ships nautical series.
It's Like if the Cook Islands releasing the Camel series.
Any who, Ships always represent Communication and Commerce up until somebody decided to put cannons on ships, a whole different ball of wax.
