Drug abuse has caused great pandemonium throughout human history, many lunatics we find near refuse dumps, gutters and on roadsides are victims of drug abuse and most of these were caused by the individuals themselves. You might be wondering what drug abuse is but calm down, I'm here to tell you all you need to know about it.

Drug abuse can simply be said to be the usage of drugs or substances related to it in an unlawful manner. Drug abuse could take different forms like:

1. Taking incorrect dosages of drugs above or below the doctor's prescription

2. Self medication

3. Using of drugs for selfish reasons known by the user

4. Consumption of hard drugs like nicotine, cocaine and marijuana

5. Giving out drugs to a novice without detailed explanation

People abuse drugs due to many personal reasons like;

💉 Depression; many around the world especially teens who are victims of depression take to abusing drugs to help them calm down and forget some of their worries

💉Peer Pressure; this peer pressure has really lured many especially youths into drug abuse as friends pressurized them into experimenting with drugs and they get addicted in the long run

💉 Lack of parental guidance; many parent live the "I don't care lifestyle" giving room for their children to live any kind of wayward lives and of course this doesn't end well

💉 Sexual harassment: victims of rape do resort to taking of illegal drugs to feel at peace and wipe off the awful experience and stigma

Other major reasons for drug abuse are;

A. For boldness and courage
B. Failure to achieve some set goals
C. Ignorance
And the list continues.....

Abuse of drugs have very harmful consequences such as;

1. Bad reputation: a person who abuses alcohol and misbehaves due to its influence is tagged as a drunkard in the community, many people avoids him and his opinions are never accepted

2. Mental disorder; I can vividly remember a family friend who graduated from higher institution with a first class degree, he was very handsome,cute, just okay and was loved by everyone. Due to his state of unemployment and the many tragedies that befell his family, he resorted to taking drugs. Today he's an official madman in rags at Ring road junction here in uyo. He's now very violent but it shocks that he's calm when he sees any familiar person, mom sometimes gives him food when passing through that route and cries terribly. A wasted destiny and future 😢

3. Imprisonment; some drug addicts are imprisoned because of the havocs they cause when influenced by the harmful drugs

4. Suicidal thoughts; many who have resorted to taking drugs have actually seen that it adds to their problems not the other way round

5. Paranoia; many drug abusers rarely earn the trust of others even family member because of what they are capable of doing

Although drug abuse could not be eliminated totally, it could be reduced or prevented by;

I. Avoid pressure or influence by peers

II. Parents should be very watchful and act immediately if observed that their children engages in some bad behaviors

III. Individuals should never resort to drugs as a means of solving their problems

IV. Both governmental and non-governmental agencies should speak against and discourage drug abuse through seminars, demonstrations etc

V. Laws should be made on the use of drugs and defaulters of such laws must be punished accordingly

VI. Religious bodies should talk against drug abuse

Drug abuse has not only brought shame to us individually, but our country has been tagged as a country that abuses drugs. No wonder our citizens are always checked and searched the most at airports leading to other countries because of the bad name we've earned. Therefore, we must root it out because it has done no good at all.
