A fan is an apparatus with some rotating blades that creates a current of air for cooling or ventilation.

The fan was innovated in 1882 by Schuyler Skaats Wheeler. After some years later, Philip Diehl ascend a fan blade on a sewing machine motor and attached it to the ceiling, created the ceiling fan, which he applied for license in August and it was granted on November 12th, 1882

In the early years of 1880s, a DC motor supply the first electric fan, which came with two blades. In the 1890s, AC motors were attached to the original, along with several other improvement. General Electric started selling a model with overlapping blades in the 1920s, and fans started being offered in various colors (originally only black). The acceptance of air conditioning in the late twentieth century led to decreased of fan sales, but fans is till in existence, as they can be found in numerous types of electronics shoo

Development of electric fans

There was an issue, all cooling devices depends on manual or horse-powered blowers. Wheeler’s discovery that electricity could be used to turn a fan in the year 1860 to 1923
Which was a year after Garfield’s assassination. He built a fan comprises of two blades powered by an electric motor that drew creativity from Thomas Edison’s and Nicola Tesla’s designs. THe fan was marketed in Electric motor company Crocker & Curtis

He became a famous member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He acquired J.’s library in 1901. Timothy Clark, a British electrical engineer contribute his collection to the IEEE under the condition that the group supply the Clark Collection with a comfortable home.

Though, Philip H. Diehl developed the electric fan he was an electrician so after the Chicago fire in 1871 everything he ever owned was destroyed. That was when Singer Sewing Machines hired him on the East Coast, that was where he worked until he relocated to Southern California.

In the year 1887 license was issued to him for the ceiling fan he invented. That was when he began with a sewing machine motor, which he boarded onto a fan blade, and put it on a ceiling. The ceiling fan was then fitted with a light fixture by Diehl as the origin of his own business.

  • Fans are used for spreading air in rooms and buildings;
  • it is used for cooling motors
  • it is used for cooling and drying people, materials, or products;
  • it is used for exhausting dust and noxious fumes; for conveying light materials;
  • it is used for forced draft in steam boilers;
  • it is also used in a heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems.

It is easy to dismiss fans as just a way to invent a quick air current. Many fan models nowadays play other notable roles around the house, such as ventilate or actively cool down the environment. So far.there are many alternatives available. It all depends on your needs

Fan is very good because it helps to fight mosquitoes away. When it is blowing, it won't give the mosquitoes chance to fly around. Not only that, to enjoy your sleep with fan thanks for the inventor's of fan. Am all the fans you just listened, I love the ceiling fan and standing fan.

Philip H. Diehl did a great job, I can't imagine life without fan especially in this hot Nigeria even with fan some season are unbearable because of the hot weather all thanks to him

Thank you for the great post. I'd like to add a few more important events, related to the electric fan:

1.) 1904 – Philip H. Diehl invents the first oscillating fan
2.) 1910 – electric fans are used in households
3.) 1920 – electric fans are used in commercial buildings
1933 – Silver Swan appears with a radically elegant design
4.) 1940 – The Packard is the first car to offer optional “factory air” in a vehicle

The story of the electric fan is really interesting. There are fans in so many homes and industries but a few people know how it all started :)
