As Death Comes 🔥
i
death. death. death
is walking towards us
in the winds that blow everyday,
in the water we draw from wells,
in the food that goes to sit on thrones
in our bellies. death is coming for us all.
ii
the army of death marches on
into our world. the gates of hades
are open. a tremor is building underneath
the earth. a dirge is waiting to fall out of
the lips of the baata drum. the coffinmaker
is nailing children of the forest. he is making
confinements for cold bodies. the earth is
waiting for multiplication.
[for a cold body is more earth to the earth].
a funeral is hanging
in the air. ominous tunes are waiting within
the womb of the flute. the rhythm of death
is ready to be born.
when we watch the television,
& we see the obituary of
someone's beloved, we
know that death is coming for us all
death is coming for all
of us
iii
i know the army of death
is marching towards me
with teeth grinning & faces
hard like the kernel of the nut,
but i do not fear death. because i
am the stone that cracks the kernel
of this army. let death come
in the volume of water.
or in the body of the wind.
or in the torture of the sun.
i will not fear. because i cannot be destroyed. i am the house
that stands on the rock that makes a flood as a mirage.
iv
if i die, i live
if i don't die, i live.
where then is the fear
of death? of death. of death.
where then is the fear of death?
my body is Waterloo
for the army of death.
the day death enters into my skin,
you may think it has seized my breath
because i won't be breathing. but do not
wail. for God is within me. & God cannot die.
v
i will rise.
God will rise
from within me
& my body with him.
then will i jeer at death.
make it a banter of words.
sing it a long song of mockery.
one day, death will die. & men who
house God will rise unvanquished from
their graves. & say with derision: "death,
where is your sting?"
so, this death that is coming for us all,
do not fear it. your body is
the tabernacle of God
