Review: The End of the F***ing World

The End of the F****ing World may be a difficult series to recommend, I say this because it takes a long time to see it, and it is not that it is a production that is taken lightly. This series took the credit of being one of the few productions that I liked since its first chapter. I say difficult because after seeing it, it is difficult to think that another person might like it.

This is the story of Alyssa and James, two teenagers with emotional problems who are united by one thing in common, are suffering, and each channel suffering in their own way. Alyssa is rebellious and disinterested, while James withdraws and kills animals.

This makes these two young women, but with something in common, become friends. James accepts this idea of having friends, because he no longer plans to continue killing animals, but rather killing people, and Alyssa seems to be a good way to fulfill his goals, while Alyssa only wants a friend and maybe a little sex, which is the way she wants to channel her frustration.

This is how they begin to be friends. Alyssa enters James's life, but due to her family problems, she concludes that she must flee from her house, and James is the means to achieve it, although all he wants is to kill her and is looking for the right moment to do it.

In this way a journey of self-discovery begins for James to discover, worth the redundancy, he does not want to kill, in fact, he feels very lonely and with a lot of pain from which he cannot flee. Alyssa, for her part, discovers that all she needs is love, and James demonstrates it without a doubt.

But on this crazy journey many crimes and infractions are committed and, at a certain point, the murder that James wanted so much. Because of everything that happens around these teens, they must run away to be together.

There are many complex stories in this series, which usually have something to tell about pain. But the best stories and interpretations are taken by Jessica Barden and Alex Lawther (each is their leading role respectively), who can demonstrate very raw emotions about sadness, abandonment and anger, even in the simplest way possible, it involves the viewer and they make us live their reality.

I have to say that the series shocked me, because of its way of showing the harsh reality in which these characters live, especially James, and how his disconnection with the world leads him to kill animals as if it were a routine; but as we move forward in the episodes we discover that this disconnection from the world, happens because of the pain and that this character is not really bad, I just stop feeling emotions, due to a great trauma that forced him to commit said disconnection and how it becomes to reincorporate slowly, to feel not only love, but attachment and friendship, it is impressive.

It is a tough series that makes you reflect on the importance of friendly and sentimental relationships that a person has.

A detail that I really liked was the way this series has to narrate everything that happens. You tell us the events from the perspective of different characters, each narrating their version of the story and the emotions they experience.

Definitely this story leaves you thinking about many things, also, Jonathan Entwistle did a great job adapting the graphic novel by Charles S. Forsman, entitled "The End of the Fucking World". Recommended: Yes, it is an excellent series that, if you give it a chance, will keep you trapped until you finish its first season and want to see the next one.

Sort:

i want to say that i tried to watch this but lost interest pretty quickly because i get annoyed by teenagers being depicted as having very adult problems and deep lines of thinking. Probably because I had a few friends like that in high school and they annoyed the hell outta me. Maybe i'll dive back in because it seems the show takes a turn later on that i was unaware of and would probably find interesting.

I have a tendency to walk way from shows pretty quickly these days but that's just because a majority of the shows i have seen on NF lately have been pretty terrible.

To give such an adult tone and so much depth to teenagers with problems, the truth is if they passed a little. But the series is fine as it is. I also differ a lot from the series today, so I try to choose one very well when I want to see it.

It looks like a great movie :D
