Dear Friends

The challenge that the friend @wakeupkitty proposes us today, "Looking forward / Looking back" makes us consider an examination of conscience of what will be the moment that we will live in the future in relation to what we have lived in the past.

To venture to define what "Looking ahead" is for me, I must first touch on aspects of my life lived in the past. That is why I will review in this post what I experienced back in my life. I'm going to stop today just to review what has been my past in relation to the world of technology.

Looking to the past

I was born in the mid-fifties, being that my chronological age is 65 years, in the first years of my life when I attended school in the first grade, I was scared with a doll from the anatomy class that was in one of classrooms, this fear has remained in my memory forever, being that for that reason I did not study medicine but study engineering.

Being small, the technological device with which I had access to the world was a vacuum tube radio, it remained in the kitchen and my mother listened to radio novels with it.

Here in Venezuela then a little late came black and white television in the early sixties, little by little in each home the families were able to acquire one of those computers. At that time, some families did not have the possibility of having a television at home, so they would then visit the neighbors to be able to watch the soap operas.

In 1969 an event marked the before and after the space race, as were the first steps of man on the moon. At that time I was studying high school and I was already interested in telecommunications technology.

As my vocational inclination revolved around technology, I did not enroll in the university in the career of electrical engineering. So one of the subjects I took was programming and computer languages ​​(at that time, the programming language was Fortram and we had to use punch cards).

Already later with the appearance of the microprocessor the world of computing and technology was favored since from that moment to the present day the cost of computers and associated devices has been made available to the common people, so much so that at this moment that I am writing these lines I am using my cell phone with many more functionalities than I enjoyed in my childhood, adolescence and university career with what was radio, television and the first computer devices.

Later, when I was studying for my doctorate, I witnessed the beginnings of the internet, already in college I got my first email account and part of the bibliographic search I was able to do thanks to researching the internet in the libraries of various universities. At that time, a co-worker indicated that we were going to be able to develop computer programs with graphic language and other wonders that were not yet present at that time.

Already in the mid-90s, the impact of computing on society developed more rapidly. Since those years, many of us live attentive to technology and our ordinary life unfolds tied to it.

Looking at the future

Now we face a world where technology has permeated society, where now physical currency (in metal or paper) is ceasing to circulate, so that now money is just a number in the computer or in any case it has a valuation as an electronic currency (cryptocurrency), we also see that we can communicate permanently with our relatives or friends who are in other countries. All this makes the imagination and the way of doing business expand and be carried out in unthinkable ways.

At this time, however, we have seen that humanity has had to come to a halt in its crazy race as a result of the COVID-19 virus. This pandemic has impacted the economy of the countries and in particular that of families. I have a feeling that we are still in the beginning of what this tribulation is representing.

If I see that there is a renewed interest in the space race in the conquest and exploration of other planets and in seeing to be able to maintain the dominion that God has granted us regarding the goods present on planet earth and access to universal knowledge.

Thinking ahead means keeping the faith, hope and charity of having a friendlier world and that we are able to value the treasures with which God has rewarded us.
