Hi Everyone! 🌿💜

We hope you are very well, plant lovers. ✨🌿We have a super special theme so stay with us. 👍

Today We will talk about: Chlorophylls - Carotenoids - Anthocyanins. 🧡💚❤️

Undoubtedly one of the topics that we are most passionate about are those that allow us to generate benefits for our plants. Have you ever bought a beautiful plant in the nursery simply because its vibrant colors caught your attention and after 15 days of having it at home it changes completely? Well yes. This is the case of many beginning collectors who do not know why this phenomenon in succulents or more than a phenomenon is a natural process that many are unaware of, today we want to talk to you about it.

The photographs below show the process that we managed to have and that are very important in succulents, these are known as Chlorophylls - Carotenoids - Anthocyanins, the three work hand in hand and then we study them a little more.

Chlorophylls:

They are responsible for the entire photosynthesis process in plants, producing a green color in them, it is important to highlight that as the plant ages, Chlorophyll decreases significantly in it, turning opaque and less vibrant colors than before.

Carotenoids:

They are present in plants like the previous one but it highlights bronze, red, orange, brown colors, also fulfilling its photosynthesis process but very internal to Chlorophyll.

Anthocyanins:

This element is one of the most important since they allow a direct color change in succulents. Highlighting violet, purple, blue and pink colors, when the plants are exposed to high sun temperatures, they are activated immediately to protect them from possible burns.

We must bear in mind that not all plants are ready to change color directly, it all depends on the genetic condition that each of them have and the species, those that are all green can highlight their appearance by means of a tan in bronze colors, and Those that are pale as red in color stand out in intense red and intense purple, this varies depending on the species, so it is good to know them and study them to know how to identify them.

When we expose them completely to the sun in a natural way, what we know as pruin or epicuticular wax begins to come out, it is like a natural protection factor that comes out when they feel exposed. Its color change varies depending on multiple factors such as:

  • The lighting
  • Irrigation
  • Hot weather
  • Cold weather
  • Sudden temperature change

How do we get them to change color?

One of the easiest ways to achieve this phenomenon is by bringing them to a stress level, we are already aware that they store water inside so they can withstand a long period of time of receiving irrigation, if we multiply the drought time in them so natural will seek to highlight their colors to protect themselves at this time, it is something like they deplete their resources and show extreme factors.

Climatic factors play a fundamental role in them, cold weather generally activates Anthocyanins, proving very significant changes, while more arid climates activate Carotenoids causing orange and bronze colors, you have to know our climatic seasons and play with the light and irrigation, all this is a process that we will know how to master over time and with the evolution of plants.

Without a doubt, getting all this information from you helps the plants that we can have at home. The process of transformation of a new plant to its aging is notorious, and all the aspects of this change where the climate and other relevant factors intervene. The depletion of their resources is what we must be aware of in order to keep them in optimal conditions.

Thanks for sharing this valuable content, I really appreciate the fact that the plants are shown, in their various processes. An exact sample of the change produced, and the benefit in our care for them. Great variety of plants, to offer and that people who have this model and others, can be aware to favor them in their care. Life, through chlorophyll, adds that color it needs, adding life to it.
