Summer is hardly over when the next season already begins. Sometimes the transitions are rather fluid and you hardly notice them. Only when you look really closely, you recognize the many small signs that so much has changed around you again. Most of the time you don't even want to notice it, the feeling of being here and now is so exhilarating and invigorating. But you won't be able to stop the change, even if you try to resist it and pretend that it doesn't concern you at all.

And even though I was still caught up in summer, it is obvious that autumn is now leading the way. The best proof are the many orange persimmons (or Kaki, as they are called over here) that are now hanging on the trees everywhere and want to be harvested soon. Nashi pears and even more Kakis are probably the autumn fruit par excellence in Japan. Now no one can deny the change of seasons, when the Kakis are due, summer is just gone.

The tree we examined was already hanging full of rather oval fruits, which had attracted our attention due to their slightly unusual shape. Normally Kakis are rounder and not quite so egg-shaped, but these ones in front of us were so shapely and shiny up there on the tree that you would have loved to bite into them. Of course, this is not a good idea, because even if they are already ripe, they would still be inedible. After harvesting, the kakis have to soak in a brew of shochu, a local high-proof spirit, before they can be eaten at all. Unfortunately, the alcohol does not make it into the fruit, so they can be sold and offered without extra warning.

So if you see some kakis smiling at you in your local fruit store, don't worry and treat yourself to some of these delicious autumn fruits. You might just taste the summer, or maybe even a little bit of the shochu. It's worth a try!

Kaum ist der Sommer vorbei, fängt die nächste Zeit bereits an. Manchmal sind die Übergänge eher fließend und man bemerkt sie kaum. Erst wenn man so richtig genau hinschaut, erkennt man die vielen kleinen Zeichen, dass sich um einen herum wieder so viel verändert hat. Man möchte es ja meistens gar nicht mitbekommen, so erhabend und belebend ist das Erlebnis im Hier und Jetzt. Aber aufhalten kann man den Wandel meist nie, auch wenn man sich noch so dagegen stemmen tut und vielleicht so tut, als ginge einen das alles gar nicht an.

Und auch wenn ich immer noch Sommer gefangen war, ist es doch unübersehbar, dass der Herbst nun das Zepter führt. Bester Beweis sind die viele orangenen Kakis, die nun allerorts an den Bäumen hängen und demnächst geerntet werden wollen. Nashi-Birnen und noch viel mehr Kaki sind wohl das Herbst-Obst in Japan schlechthin. Nun kann keiner mehr den Wechsel der Jahreszeiten abstreiten, wenn die Kakis fällig sind, ist der Sommer einfach dahin.

Der von uns begutachtete Baum hing bereits voll mit eher ovalen Früchten, die aufgrund der doch leicht ungewöhnlichen Form unsere Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen hatten. Normalerweise sind Kakis runder und nicht ganz so eiförmig, aber diese hier vor uns waren so wohlgeformt und glänzen dort oben am Baum, dass man am liebsten hinein gebissen hätte. Natürlich ist das keine gute Idee, denn selbst, wenn sie schon reif sind, wären sie doch immer noch ungenießbar. Nach der Ernte müssen die Kakis erst einmal in einem Sud aus Shochu, einer einheimischen hochprozentige Spirituose, weichen, bevor sie überhaupt verzehrt werden können. Der Alkohol schafft es dann aber (leider) nicht ins Fruchtfleisch, so dass auch dieses Obst ohne extra Warnung verkauft und angeboten werden kann.

Wenn euch demnächst auch in eurem Obstladen ein paar Kakis anlächeln sollten, schlagt also unbekümmert zu und gönnt euch ein paar diese leckeren Herbstfrüchte. Vielleicht schmeckt ihr ja den Sommer heraus, oder vielleicht sogar doch ein wenig von dem Shochu. Einen Versuch ist es wert!
