How Brain Works

“Whatever you are searching for in this world lies within you” this famous quote by Rumi has grasped the attention of many but what it actually conveys, have we ever thought about it? Realities are usually hidden beneath layers of depth, and it requires a seeker to discover them. We search for health in this world when all of it actually starts with us. Our health is a direct reflection of our mind and the mind comprises of our thoughts. Whatever we feed to our brain becomes food for our body. There is no use in complaining to a tree about tasteless fruits which it bears when it was us who bore unhealthy seeds to the ground. Why are we blaming the tree then? Similarly, why do we blame our body for declining health when it’s us who are incorporating destructive thoughts into our minds?

Now Question Is How we control our thoughts?

There is a simple trick that works for many individuals. Whenever you have a destructive thought immediately reverse it with a positive one. It’s like counting the blessings when you are feeling ungrateful about life. It helps in reducing this feeling and eventually your mind accepts what you are trying to teach it. This overwhelming emotion of ungratefulness is actually due to reduced levels of a hormone named Serotonin. It is also what we call a happy hormone because it is responsible for any alterations in our mood and behaviour.

Why Gratitude.......?

Gratitude is what boosts our serotonin levels. When a person feels grateful about little things in life, it automatically increases serotonin in his body bringing about a feeling of happiness and ultimately better health. It has been seen through intensive research that those who practice gratitude daily are happier as compared to those who just keep on complaining about life. Being grateful about something and watching people do the same have a strong effect on our minds at neurotransmitter levels. The daily practice can actually strengthen this effect of gratitude on releasing balanced levels of serotonin and dopamine which will be seen through our health because “It is not happiness that brings us gratitude. It is gratitude that brings us happiness.”

Other Means of Boosting our Serotonin Levels?

Apart from self-induced thoughts like gratitude, there are some other means of boosting our serotonin levels. To some people, it might sound absurd that exposure to sunlight could help reduce depression or feelings of sadness. However in reality it does help in increasing serotonin, and thorough research has been found that people who suffered from seasonal depression were happier in summers (bright daylight) as compared to winters with reduced sunlight levels.

Is Walk is Helpful To Increase Serotonin?

Walking for just 30 minutes or anaerobic exercise also helps in boosting happy hormones in our bodies. When we walk, it helps in kicking the production of serotonin but what happens with brisk walk has even more amazing results. A brisk walk not only helps in cutting our fat by burning calories but also helps in the production of dopamine which is another hormone just like serotonin. This hormone brings a feeling of reward to our minds. It’s like going to the gym and feeling rewarded on our way back home. The same is the case with brisk walk; it brings a feeling of accomplishment with it because it releases dopamine and makes us feel happy about ourselves and ultimately about our life.

Why Healthy Diet....?

A healthy diet comprising of foods such as yoghurt, rice and eggs also gives a serotonin boost. How does it happen? Well, yoghurt is rich in good bacteria which help us in maintaining a healthy stomach environment, rice which are rich carbohydrate source when taken in composition with high tryptophan foods like eggs, salmon and nuts yields better results. High tryptophan diets are usually suggested because tryptophan is used for the production of serotonin in our body.
By just following a healthy diet, there is a great impact on our happiness. What could happen if we do not neglect the importance of our thoughts and a healthy workout routine? Wonders could happen! By simply implementing a single trick out of these, we are able to bring about great change in our life then using these in conjunction with each other would bring revolutionary changes which we hardly could think of.
