The history of long-distance communication that is often done by humans was originally in the form of using sounds and other tools. Since the discovery of electrical or electro-optical signals, it is more possible for humans to communicate within an unlimited distance and the efficiency of delivering information because of its very high speed.

The number of ways to communicate makes many people use telephone, video and teleconference facilities and so on to communicate with friends and family and also to do buying and selling business, and even do weddings or commonly called marriages. Marriage using telephone or teleconference facilities is still considered strange by most Indonesian people because it is considered unnatural. It can even lead to debate among experts or legal officials in relation to determining the validity of marriage using telephone or teleconference media.

Long-distance marriages in Indonesia have a historical basis since 1989, when news emerged of marriages over the telephone network. The problem of the marriage itself is not really a problem, but the facilities or techniques used in carrying out the marriage which are then questioned, are considered unusual, then many opinions have developed stating that they are not valid, some people consider it valid as long as it is fulfilled by the Shari'a.

Along with the advancement of communication and information technology, it is the turn of the internet network which has become the target of polemics, because this network also displays a marriage model that is similar to telephone media. It's just that the internet is more technologically advanced, with the help of image visualization, which is certainly better than the voice of the unknown face and shape of the other person.

For Muslims, the marriage contract is the most solemn and sacred ceremony. That is why in its implementation it is made in such a way as to become one of the strong binders between the two lovebirds that will affect the household ark. It is not surprising that many people, especially from the family, are usually invited to the event to enliven the ceremony in question. Their presence is also to witness as well as to give their blessing so that the bond that will be formed becomes strong and lasts until the end of life in the body. However, in the course of their lives, they were repeatedly hit by waves and storms, but they remained strong, unbreakable because of the heat and not weathered by the rain.

Problems will arise when the prospective husband and guardian from the woman's side are elsewhere. For example, the prospective husband is outside Indonesia, while the female guardian is in Indonesia or vice versa, then carries out the marriage contract using existing communication media, for example using video teleconference. The problem is how marriages via the internet, both of which can see each other, but not in a physical majlis, are not present together in a group of assemblies. In practice, consent for long-distance marriages is more common than long-distance divorce.

Even though it has caused polemics and debates, marriages carried out by telephone or teleconference have begun to be often carried out by the people of Indonesia. So far, marriages are usually held in one assembly or one place. However, along with the development of communication technology, there is a possibility that the marriage will not be held in one assembly through the Teleconference facility. The issue that needs to be studied is the review of Islamic law on the implementation of the marriage contract via the Teleconference, so that the people who will carry it out can consider it properly.
