It's more healthy: Sourdough

In the Netherlands most bread is baked in molds. It's the most common bread and each bread is sold cut into slices. Perhaps some types of bread sold by a bakery can still be bought at one piece. A good bakery bakes his own bread, all types of bread except those sold at the nature shop. If you go over there you see a totally different kind of bread. Bread that's not baked in a mold, bread that's not soft, not as high and a slice of this bread is heavy, compact and totally different from what most are used to eat.

They say it's more healthy but is it true? For a very long time it was stated white bread is not as healthy as the brown and dark bread sold. It all turns out to be fake. If it comes to it white isn't more unhealthy as brown. Brown bread is coloured which means the more healthy isn't more than a sold illusion. Propaganda made to buy something different. Advertisement meant to sell.

What you bake at home never looks the same as a bread sold in a shop. How come? The fact is bread factories and bakers use mixes. Mixes that make it easier to make that perfect bread. They use yeast, more yeast than written in any recipe, yeast plus some extras.
Yeast isn't healthy, can even be dangerous for some people. Yeast activates more than dough only.

Sourdough, therefore, is healthier. It's a starter you feed and a part of it you add to the dough you make for your bread, bread without yeast. It tastes as good but indeed the bread does taste different from what you are used to. How different depends on your ingredients. Bread made out of wheat doesn't look or taste the same as one made with oatmeal, cornflour, spelt flour or rye.

In the Netherlands bread made with sourdough isn't common but it's for sale. Not only at Nature or Bio shops but some (German) bakeries sell it too. In Germany, it's a more common bread and the Lidl supermarket sells packages with sourdough. It's dry, perhaps not the way it should be but it's a good start for those who care about their health or like to try a different bread for a change.
