Friday morning: Mayor D.L. Garner Jr. of Big Loft, VA went to bed stressed out and woke up even more stressed.

Friday was the last day of the great memorial that the Black and Latino community were observing for their 12,000 lost in the Ridgeline Fire … 100,000 people had turned out, occupying Cedar Court and going at will to the 4,000 spots where homes had once stood, and paying their last respects.

That was 100,000 who were not working in and around Big Loft.

The garbage had not been fully taken out for a week. Still, since the restaurants weren't functioning, there was less garbage to work with … two interlinking problems among others that were pushing the city to the breaking point.

Mayor Garner had kept essentials going, a colossal feat that satisfied few – so many people were angry that he would not intervene somehow to force the service workers of Big Loft back to work that they were making his job a lot harder than it needed to be.

The stress was horrific, especially since there was no way of knowing if full service would be restored on Monday – even if it was, it would still take at least a week to get caught up, and the damage to the city's economy could not be recouped.

Mayor Garner had a headache before leaving his home, and was not ready for what came next.

He walked out into a whole world of found art.

The field across the street from his house had been transformed by a heavy dew that sparkled in the sun on the remaining golden-green grass … above that were trees in every shade of red, gold, and brown, and above that, a sky as blue as summer once again. Thus stunned the mayor into a complete halt.

“Oh Lord, my God,” he breathed at last, “You have my attention … I'm sorry for worrying and doubting … here You are doing all this, and I know You can do all things … I know You can work out the situation I have to face. If you can take this field from this gray and gloomy week, and make this living work of art, I know You can guide me to help Big Loft get through today and the rest of my term.”
