RE: Chess problem 78 / Schachaufgabe 78

Solution.

Congrats to @iceblue for finding the key move of today's chess problem, and thus being the winner of this round! Congrats also to @rodrook for the solution of a side variation! :)

Here now the full solution of the problem:

1. ... a3

Now we have:

a)

2. Kc3 Bb4+!
3. Kxb4 a2 And black wins.

b)

2. Bc7 (Idea: 2. ... a2 3. Be5) 2. ... Bd4!!

Now white can take the black bishop with pawn, knight or king, but in every case he cannot stop the black passed pawn anymore.

If you enjoyed the riddle, show it to other chess players and ask them if they can solve it! :)

I am happy that I am declared the winner of this round :-) One additonal note however: seems to me that it could be quite difficult for black to win the endgame even after queening on a1. In Order to win the game black has to include the king. When doing so White could use the time to advance his own pawns, e.g. b3-b4-b5 and so on. What do you think about that?

What I did, is to enter the end position into ChessX (with Stockfish as analysis engine), and it seemed that the evaluation of the black position keeps increasing, which is not a proof but a hint that probably black should win.

If you like and have the necessary time just analyze it further.

Thanks for this very beautiful endgame quiz with an amazing winning move in line b) (2. ... Bd4!)!

Very nice chess problem and solution, yes the bishop move will not allow the king to catch up to the pass pawn.
