Doctor Peste (Dr Plague)
¡Saludos! les comparto mi interpretación del Doctor de la Peste, un dibujo que utilicé como boceto para tejer un amigurumi o muñeco tejido a crochet que compartiré en una próxima publicación. El mismo fue realizado con lápiz de grafito HB, bolígrafo y lápices de colores sobre papel Bond base 24 de 27x21cm.
Greetings! I share my interpretation of the Plague Doctor, a drawing that I used as a sketch to knit an amigurumi or crochet doll that I will share in a future publication. It was made with HB graphite pencil, ballpoint pen and colored pencils on 27x21cm Bond 24 base paper.
El doctor de la peste es la representación de un personaje basado en el medioevo, cuando las plagas o enfermedades contagiosas azotaron a Europa, esto dio origen a la aparición de Doctores de la Peste, es decir, los únicos que eran capaces de tratar a las personas que fueran contagiadas.
The Plague Doctor is the representation of a character based on the Middle Ages, when contagious plagues or diseases plagued Europe, this gave rise to the appearance of the Plague Doctors, that is, the only ones who could treat infected people.

Su aparición primigenia se origina junto con la aparición de las pestes, pero cuando aparece la llamada Peste Negra entre 1400 y 1500 ya era por así decirlo una profesión de arraigada trayectoria, los países pagaban con sus impuestos el sueldo de esas personas que tenían el valor de tratar con los enfermos de peste, así mismo ya para avanzada la edad media se había adoptado todo una indumentaria propia para este tipo particular de médico, dichos trajes aun pueden verse en algunos museos de Europa.
The appearance of the plague doctors originates with the appearance of plagues, when the so-called Black Plague appears between 1400 and 1500 it was already a profession with a long history, the countries paid with their taxes the wages of those people who had the Courage to deal with the plague patients, likewise already by the middle ages an entire outfit had been adopted for this particular type of doctor, such suits can still be seen in some museums in Europe.

Como es bien sabido, en parte la edad media es llamada la época oscura por el desavance científico, puesto que el poder de la religión radical veía con malos ojos los descubrimientos en botánica y medicina cuyo origen no tuviera explicación más allá de los milagros, atribuyéndosele un carácter de brujería, esto tuvo consecuencias graves como la proliferación de enfermedades contagiosas, agravadas obviamente por aglomeración de personas en las ciudades, las guerras e invasiones.
As is well known, in part the Middle Ages is called the Dark Age due to scientific failure, since the power of the radical religion frowned on discoveries in botany and medicine whose origin had no explanation beyond miracles, attributing to it a character of witchcraft, this had serious consequences such as the proliferation of contagious diseases, obviously aggravated by the agglomeration of people in the cities, wars and invasions.

En la antigüedad las civilizaciones europeas toman influencia de grandes civilizaciones lejanas como por ejemplo la egipcia que tenía un gran avance medico e incluso en el tratamiento de enfermedades y embalsamado de cuerpos, sin embargo, llegada a la edad media esta influencia mermó, nos es de extrañar entonces que los médicos de la peste incluso no fueran personas que estudiaran medicina, tal profesión era una especie de oficio, algo que se asemeja un poco al caso actual de las personas que trabajan en funerarias, que sin ser forenses aprenden las labores de preparación de los cuerpos, mientras que los doctores de carrera se encargaban de las enfermedades comunes.
In ancient times, European civilizations took influence from great distant civilizations such as the Egyptian, which had a great medical advance and even in the treatment of diseases and embalming of bodies, however, in the middle ages, this influence decreased, it is not surprising then that the plague doctors were not even people who studied medicine, such a profession was a kind of trade, something that somewhat resembles the current case of people who work in funeral homes, who without being forensics learn the tasks of preparation of bodies, while career doctors dealt with common illnesses.
Asimismo, parte del mismo desconocimiento acerca del origen de la peste y de su transmisión, se formularon diversas teorías, una de las que más caló fue la teoría del Miasma, en ella se explicaba que la enfermedad de la peste era adquirida por el aire o los malos olores en el aire, es por ellos que la indumentaria de los doctores de la peste estaba diseñada para protegerse de ello.
Likewise, part of the same ignorance about the origin of the plague and its transmission, various theories were formulated, one of which stood out the most was the theory of Miasma, in it it was explained that the plague disease was acquired by air or the bad smells in the air, it is because of them that the clothing of the plague doctors was designed to protect themselves from it.

El máscara de pico: los doctores de la peste se protegían usando una máscara que tenia la forma de un pico de ave, este pico se solía llenar de hierbas o especias olorosas que sirvieran de filtro para el aire aspirado por el médico.
The beak mask: the plague doctors protected themselves using a mask that had the shape of a bird's beak, this beak used to be filled with herbs or fragrant spices that served as a filter for the air drawn by the doctor.
Los lentes: las mascaras también tenían lentes de vidrio para proteger los ojos.
The glasses: the masks also had glass lenses to protect the eyes.
El color y los materiales: los materiales podrían ser de cuero, telas gruesas y oscuras.
Color and materials: Materials could be leather, thick and dark fabrics.
La capa: el cuerpo del médico debería permanecer completamente cubierto y protegido al contacto con los enfermos, por ellos usaban una capa que los cubría hasta los pies.
The cape: the body of the doctor should remain completely covered and protected in contact with the sick, for them they used a cape that covered them up to the feet.
Calzado: usaban botas cerradas de manera ajustada con la vestimenta, eran de cuero y materiales gruesos.
Footwear: they wore tightly closed boots with the clothing, it were made of leather and thick materials.
El bastón: los médicos de la peste solían llevar un bastón para ayudarles a no tocar a los enfermos, también el mismo servía para guardar una distancia prudente con las personas para evitar el contagio.
The cane: plague doctors used to carry a cane to help them not touch the sick, it also served to keep a safe distance from people to avoid contagion.
Las especias: entre las especias que introducían en el pico se podían encontrar la menta, las rosas, alcanfor, los clavos de olor e incluso el láudano, entre otras, de igual forma ellos llevaban consigo bolsitas de estas.
The spices: among the spices that were introduced in the beak you could find mint, roses, camphor, cloves and even laudanum, among others, in the same way they carried with them bags of these.
Extinción de los médicos: El traje realmente no los protegía de la peste, de saberlo creo que no fueran existido tales médicos que se atrevieran a tratar a los enfermos en esas condiciones, es por ello que muchos de ellos se terminaban igualmente enfermando y muriendo, en consecuencia fueron desapareciendo de a poco y comenzaron a ser muy valorados por la sociedad y los reyes, el contrato de los mismos los convertía en doctores comunitarios pagados por la sociedad, exentos de atender enfermos de otras enfermedades, además debían practicar el aislamiento para evitar el contagio de personas.
Extinction of the doctors: The suit did not really protect them from the plague, if they knew it there were no such doctors who dared to treat the sick in these conditions, which is why many of them ended up getting sick and dying, consequently, they gradually disappeared and began to be highly valued by society and kings, their contract turned them into community doctors paid by society, exempt from treating patients with other diseases, and they also had to practice isolation to avoid the contagion of people.
Función social e histórica: Una de las funciones sociales e históricas más importante que cumplieron los doctores de la peste fue la de registro, ellos llevaban una suerte de censo de los decesos por peste, esto permitió saber las cifras más cercanas a la realidad de las bajas en Europa por cada una de las petes que sufrió, por primera vez se tuvo la idea de la magnitud de la reducción de la población. Asimismo, ellos servían de testigos y redactores de testamentos al estar en contacto con las personas que estaban prontas a morir. Existieron muchos médicos celebres en aquellos años, según se cuenta el mismo Nostradamus (famoso por el libro de predicciones) fue uno de ellos, sin embargo, es sabido que debido a los riesgos de esta profesión muchos de ellos eran respetados y valorados.
Social and historical function: One of the most important social and historical functions that plague doctors fulfilled was that of registration, they carried out a kind of census of plague deaths, this allowed knowing the figures closest to the reality of the casualties in Europe for each of the petes it suffered, for the first time there was an idea of the magnitude of the population reduction. In addition, they served as witnesses and writers of wills by being in contact with people who were about to die. There were many famous doctors in those years, Nostradamus (famous for the book of predictions) was one of them, however, it is known that due to the risks of this profession many of them were respected and valued.
Avance en medicina: Por otro a los Doctores de la Peste se les permitió realizar autopsias, que eran hasta entonces una de las prácticas que habían sido prohibidas, entonces se pudo conocer los efectos que producía la enfermedad en los órganos internos. Sin embargo, también por el desconocimiento se realizaron muchas practicas contraproducentes como el sangrado de los enfermos para reducir los bulbos que generaba la enfermedad en el caso de la peste bubónica, pero que debilitaba más aun a las personas.
Advancement in medicine: On the other hand, Plague Doctors were allowed to perform autopsies, which until then had been one of the practices that had been prohibited, so it was possible to know the effects that the disease produced on internal organs. However, also due to ignorance, many counterproductive practices were carried out, such as bleeding the sick to reduce the bulbs that the disease generated in the case of bubonic plague, but which further weakened people.
Interpretación de la imagen: La imagen del Doctor ha servido de referencia para la interpretación de muchos artistas contemporáneas, para crear personajes dentro de la ilustración, la pintura y la animación, es por ello que dista un poco de la realidad, sin embargo, la imagen tétrica y espeluznante de un doctor que solo trata a las personas que tienen la peste, es como la presencia de la muerte misma, le color negro y las referencias medievales siempre estarán presentes.
Interpretation of the image: The image of the Doctor has served as a reference for the interpretation of many contemporary artists, to create characters within illustration, painting and animation, which is why it is somewhat distant from reality, however, the creepy image of a doctor who only treats people who have the plague, is like the presence of death itself, black color and medieval references will always be present.
