Fairy Tale -- Part 6

The first thing CubicHoney0146 noticed was the cold, the sense of chill seeping into deeper and deeper parts of himself. Before he had operated in a surface mood geared toward numb externals. Now that former self was feeling like a shell, a dried husk.

Now a great whirlpool flowed across the borders of himself, and even those waters were getting crisp in the cold forest air, the day's fading light filtering down through autumn leaves. Everything--the light, the air, the trees and their leaves just now beginning to turn--it all felt so close.

The premise of all of this bothered CubicHoney0146 faintly. The raven mask, for all its worth, was not a coyote mask. And this game he had somehow agreed to was a bit more than he would've bargained for...had he known.

At least he had this knapsack, with its 'inventory spaces,' that allowed him to carry all his things without ever feeling their true weight. Something in the nature of the game, he guessed.

But this was cold comfort in a world that was getting colder since the sun sank below the treeline.

He had been given other things in his 'inventory spaces,' geared toward survival. A torch, which could light his first night but not keep him warm--it will double as the handle for his first axe. The heads for an axe and a pickaxe. A machete. A canteen. A cast-iron kettle with lid. And blueprints: for a fire pit, for a rabbit trap, and for a lean-to hut.

His mission, for the most part, was just to survive. Without enough fresh water, he would go thirsty and eventually die. Without enough food, he would starve and eventually die. Without enough sleep, he would go insane and probably die wandering.

Without a fire, he would freeze in the night and eventually die. Lastly, aggressive animals could attack and kill him--though they'd have to go through CubicHoney0146's machete.

Yes, there were many ways to die in this inimical world he found himself in. There were also, at least in theory, many ways to live. He needed to get a camp set up close to clean water.

However, harvesting logs and tinder was his first prerogative.

Moving a little slower now, CubicHoney0146 attached the axe-head to the handle. A nearby squirrel was watching him closely while fretting over his furry hands.

He swung the axe. It split into the truck of a birch-tree with a resounding thunk.
