Every Shell Has a Name

At first, I thought I was looking at a collection of seashells.

Then I stepped a little closer.

Each shell carried a name, a date, a message, or a small drawing. Some simply said, "We were here." Others celebrated love, friendship, family, or a journey shared with someone special.

Suddenly, the photograph wasn't about shells anymore.

It became a collection of memories.

I found myself wondering about the people behind those handwritten messages. Where had they come from? How long had they travelled to reach this place? Were they still together? Would they ever return and search for the shell they had left behind?

Every visitor had contributed a tiny piece of their story, transforming an ordinary window into a living archive of human moments.

What fascinates me most is that none of these shells is particularly valuable on its own. You could find hundreds like them on a nearby beach.

Yet the moment someone writes a name, a promise, or a date on its surface, it becomes irreplaceable.

Photography has a similar power.

A photograph is just light captured by a camera until someone attaches a memory to it. Then it becomes impossible to replace.

Perhaps that's why this scene caught my attention.

It isn't about shells.

It's about people trying to leave behind a small reminder that, for one brief moment, their path crossed this place.

📷 Behind the Lens

What initially attracted me was the explosion of textures and warm colours. As I framed the shot, I realised that the true subject wasn't the collection itself, but the countless stories hidden within it.

Rather than focusing on a single shell, I chose a composition that embraced the apparent chaos. The overlapping shapes, handwritten messages, and hanging strings create a visual tapestry that encourages the viewer to explore the image, discovering something new every time they look.

Sometimes, the most interesting photographs don't answer questions.

They invite us to ask them.
