One can learn everything in the field, skills are needed. There are specialists operating without ever visiting medical school (once in a while one is 'caught' after many years of successful operations), same with drivers, bakers, and and and.
My grandfather was an architect never been educated, he could draw, calculate and use his hands. He was a muscician as well plus his journal about his travel to Israel was well written and an enjoyable read.

In case of need the question is: will you act?
This is the most important thing if it comes to emergencies and healthcare.

Most mothers will. Have a look at the moms if premature babies within a few days the shook babies legs if the heart machine alarm goes off, the take out (at times even put in) the probe and so on. It's the same if it comes to taking care of sick family and in some families we do a bit more like in mine simply because we find it a waste of time to visit a (grumpy, not too interested) doctor and do it ourselves. We cut out tumours, "wild meat" and do not easily whimp about pain. Like an aunt said: if the toe bothers cut it off.

In my shelter I did a lot, injections, chips, medication, probe you name it. It's no diable to call a vet for what you can do yourself. I also think who keeps animals should do care.

An example is the dog of my daughter. She had a swollen cheek. The meds the shrugging vet gave only made it worse (plus they charged 200 euros!). So the dog became worse and of course weekend, no vet on duty in the neigbourhood. She skin of the dog fell off at the skin and neck!
My daughter disinfected it and used superglue to attach the skin. It took some weeks till it all healed, she had to disinfect it and squeeze the infection she cut and kept open caused by the vet's needle out) but it worked. You can't even see she was in such a bad shape. I thought the dog would die which would be a tragedy for my child.
I am very proud of her she did this, cared enough to act.

I had my vet assistant papers long after I ran the shelter, the same counts for first aid for animals (I already drove and gave aid while working for the animal ambulance). Those papers didn't really ad anything it was more for show or to be official allowed to.

To me the best schooling is in the field. What is educated is just info and in way too many cases old info and far from practical.
