The life of the people of the Char area
Teesta River has flowed through Dimla upazila of Nilphamari district in the north of Bangladesh. The Teesta River flooded and destroyed millions of families, and thousands of animals including humans lost their lives.
When the flood recedes, due to the intensity of the current, the dam starts to break. Millions of hectares of arable land including numerous houses were washed away by the river due to the breach.
During the flood, the sand of the river flooded and covered the arable land on both sides with a layer of sand. Because of this, farming and living in a vast area. Many homeless families took shelter in high dams, shelter centres and various educational institutions during and after floods due to river bursting.
After a large area is inundated with sand, the area is called four areas. Char area became unfit for living. After a few years of fallow, people removed the sand and started farming and building houses. Due to the collapse of the. When the Teesta River breaks, some villages are lost in the river and new villages are also created. Homesteads, Hat Bazar School, and Madrasa were established in the new village.
The life journey of Char people is very miserable. There are no roads. You have to travel by boat during monsoon. Horse carts are used in the dry season. The price of any item is a little higher because the cost of transportation is higher.
It goes without saying that the crop grows well in the pasture area because the silt soil is high in this land. I will give more details about Char in my next article. Everyone will be fine inshallah.
