Natural disasters often occur in areas that are prone to this, various ways are done to minimize this so that an area can survive and develop well. The heaviest natural disaster ever experienced by my own region, Aceh. In 2004 there was a devastating Tsunami with a magnitude of 9+ liter scale which almost flattened the entire building, paralyzed electricity and claimed many lives.

Recently, my region, North Aceh, has been grieving again. Continuous rains flushed the entire area causing very large floods. Rainfall in September-December often disturbs the community because they are afraid of a flood disaster which has become an uninvited guest every year.

What caused this natural disaster to occur? Of course there are many factors that influence this and the main factor is because of human actions that are greedy for a prosperous life but ignore the welfare of nature. Various harmful human actions;

  • littering
  • deforestation
  • causes pollution
  • emits radiation
  • greenhouse manufacture
  • Illegal logging, etc

Natural disasters are not only the responsibility of the government, but also our collective responsibility. We as earth creatures should love nature by doing a lot of good things such as doing reforestation, minimizing air pollution by increasing movement using our feet and choosing other alternatives that do not cause pollution such as cycling.

I will describe one natural disaster that recently occurred in my area, namely Flood.

Areas they affect

The flood that occurred on October 4 yesterday was not too severe, because this flood only submerged 5 sub-districts (East Pirak District, Matangkuli District, Lhoksukon District, Tanah Luas District and Baktiya District). Although not severe, but enough to give a big enough impact.

residential settlements affected by flooding

The recent floods are reported to have killed tens of thousands of people, reaching more than 50 thousand people and as many as 39 thousand more people had to evacuate. In this incident, many of them suffered mental losses, especially in terms of business. The coolie area is the worst affected by this flood disaster, most of the people are traders and entrepreneurs.

How do they cause ruin?

Invariably every catastrophe will make some great devastation and have a great impact as well. Yesterday's flood had caused puddles of 1-2 meters high which were able to paralyze the streets as well as several schools and all the Matang Kuli shops which became the trading center there.

This flood has also submerged a lot of poor people's houses and some fields and rice fields. This will be very detrimental to farmers who depend on agricultural products for their livelihoods.

This extraordinary devastation has even caught the attention of the PUPR minister, who has arrived in North Aceh in anticipation of yesterday's flood.

How are the people affected?

People are very louduh especially school children, they have to stop their activities because the school is flooded which makes it impossible to go to school and of course after the flood the school will also be cleaned of mud puddles which will take 2-3 days.

Lhoksukon Samsat submerged by flood

Apart from that, offices and other agencies have experienced temporary paralysis. And for community members who want to carry out activities, they can't be as before, where most of the poor people only depend on living from agricultural products and also trade.

The most probably cause of it

There are many things that cause this flood disaster to occur, namely the decreasing absorption of rainwater due to illegal logging carried out by several irresponsible persons continuously.

The flood in my area yesterday was allegedly caused by heavy rainfall that occurred upstream of Bener Meuriah and then flowed into major rivers such as the Krueng Keureuto River, Krueng Pirak and Krueng Pase overflowing and could not accommodate the weight of the water which was too large, so there was a flood. There are also those who argue that some of the embankments of these rivers have burst, causing overflowing water to enter residential areas.

Was there a prior alert from the Government?

The government has made every effort so that flood disasters can be minimized as early as possible, one of which is by sending warnings from various media, such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook.

government warning from social media regarding flooding and landslides that may occur between 19-21 October

One of the government agencies responsible for providing warnings to all the public is the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). It mentions all the impacts as well as things that the community must do so that these impacts do not result in casualties and also physical and material harm.

The SAR team took to the streets (picture taken from my husband's gallery

In addition, the SAR team also immediately rushed to help the community and also entered remote areas and helped residents to evacuate themselves as early as possible.

What can you do in case of a situation like that?

Because I have received many warnings from the government, I am also prepared if a disaster comes to my village by doing thingsthings that according the government;

source from IG of BMKG
  • Be careful if you are active outside the home.
  • Seeking information through disaster related parties.
  • Do not do activities outside the house if it is not urgent.

Maybe for people who are often affected by floods every year, they will prepare many things such as making rafts or making higher floors to accommodate valuable items.

And I, who received the sad news from relatives affected by the flood, could only help as much as I could, such as providing shelter for them temporarily, and also helping with everything that could reduce the impact of this flood.

Flood disasters always leave deep scars for those who are affected by it. Homelessness and the ease with which people get sick make people suffer even more, therefore we must share responsibility for our environment.

Because this environment belongs to all of us. Our actions really affect the situation around Kuta, living a clean and tidy life and loving nature is one of our most meaningful actions.

Until here first my participation today, hopefully useful and see you next time,
