Indigenous Languages and Oral Traditions’ Preservation.

What is your indigenous language, is it your country's official language and can your kids speak the language?

First of all, let's look at indigenous languages as native to a particular region or country, often spoken by indigenous people or ethnic minorities.

Eggon is my indigenous language in the central part of Nigeria in West Africa. It's not an official language in my country. But English is the official language in my country.

My kids speak my indigenous language and the official Nigerian language.(English).

What are some of your country's traditions and how do you preserve them orally?

The culture of Nigeria is rich with many customs and traditions. It has almost five hundred spoken languages with more than 1150 dialects with different and similar cultures.

In Nigeria, there are four different forms of marriage Christian, Islam traditional, and court marriage. The groom's family presents some gifts to the other family of the bride as an appreciation.

Attires; many ethnic groups wear different attires based on their culture, besides the English ones worn in general. One can be identified as shown by his dress.

One other culture is the masquerades of different ethnic nationalities displayed during their traditional festivals.

Different ethnic groups had their way of marriage through payment of bride price. It is believed in African culture that marriage into a family is for all, but she is the wife of the groom in bed and not for every member of the family.

Nigeria believes in polygamy marriage, and raising many children, and believes that having a large family is part of wealth and prestige.

Food; Different foods are eaten in Nigeria by different ethnic nationalities. The Yoruba of the southwestern region eat amala most, a field prepared from yam flour.

While, the Igbo of the Southeast specializes in eating akapu prepared from cassava tuner, and the hausawa of the North eat tuwo, prepared from corn flour, so do, other minor tribes in the country eat different and similar ones.

Nigeria is faced with misrule, throwing many families' lives in danger of hunger, and insecurities, but the custom discourages violence, and people are always living a happy life, that is one of the country's traditions.

One of the Nigerian customs and traditions is the younger ones respect elders. Once one was born an hour before you, you have to respect him. Some ethnic nationalities prostrate while greetings, while others square or knell down.

In terms of social life in Nigeria, religion, family, and education play very good roles in modeling and shaping the lives of the people. Even though Western lives want to take over some of the ethnic traditions but still, some efforts are still being in progress to maintain them.

Nigeria is making some efforts by introducing the language of the immediate environment to enable them speak their languages well.

Cultural day festivals are organized in schools yearly where every ethnic nationality displays its culture.

Besides the one organized by schools, different ethnic nationalities do the same where they present different dishes during their festivals which helps in maintaining the culture.

In a nutshell, Nigeria has many different languages and my mine is Eggon in North central Nigeria as one of the minority tribes. Nigeria has many different cultures and makes efforts to preserve the culture through cultural day festivals organised in schools yearly.
