It's Changing Out There, just Like the Last Time
If you've read my previous posts, you would have known that the weather in Karachi has been incredibly hot and humid recently. People have been struggling with the relentless heatwaves daily, with one record breaking temperature day after another. It seemed like everyone was praying so much for the rain. However, some people (including me) were hoping it wouldn't rain because, in Karachi, rain mostly brings more trouble and problems than relief. The streets get flooded, drowned and it causes a lot of problems. But the heat was becoming unbearable, so it was a relief when it finally rained today after many months or you can say that after an year.
I had also mentioned in a previous posts that Karachi's weather is quite unpredictable and extreme. When it's hot, it's really scorching, and when it's cold, it's freezing and becomes unbearable for the natives. The same goes for rain, even a little bit of rain for some minutes can cause major issues and problems because there is no proper drainage system in the city to manage the rain. Just a few drops can make it seem like the whole city is submerged. Today, as a few drops started to fall, so I was reminded of a scene from Harry Potter where Hagrid says to Harry Potter, "There’s a storm coming harry. Its changing out there, just like the last time"
Suddenly, the sun was covered by clouds, and the whole sky turned gray. The weather changed rapidly from sunny to cloudy, and it started drizzling. The drizzle quickly turned into a heavy downpour. Since it was Sunday, my entire family was at home. I asked my father if we could go for a long drive, as we usually do on Sundays when we spend time together. My father agreed immediately, but my mother mentioned that there was a lot of work to be done at home. We convinced her to join us, and so my little brother, my parents, and I got ready for the drive. And guess who else came along? My beloved pet, Arya.
There are very few roads in Karachi that are not crowded, especially when the weather is nice, as everyone comes out to enjoy it. Our house is near the airport, so we decided to head in that direction since it's usually quieter. We drove towards the airport, where there is a large open ground perfect for enjoying the rain. Many families had gathered there to enjoy the weather. We sat there for a while, enjoying the rain. Arya stayed in the car initially because she is afraid of water and rain. I sat in the car with her to make sure she didn't get scared. Eventually, when the rain lightened up a bit, Arya gathered the courage to come out and enjoy it. I held her in my arms, and she actually enjoyed the rain despite her fear.
Rain always makes you crave something to eat, like biscuits, patties, wafers, or something similar. In Pakistan, we often have samosas, pakoras, and tea during the rain. I left my family there and went to get some hot and spicy samosas. We all enjoyed the samosas, and I even let Arya taste a little bit of the rainwater, which made her very happy.
After that, we drove to a famous milkshake shop because I was craving their famous cashew milkshake. I had never tried it before and thought it might be too thick and strange for my taste. But to my surprise, it was incredibly refreshing and delicious. We all enjoyed the milkshake and then returned home, happy and content.
Despite Karachi's unpredictable and extreme weather and the challenges it brings, days like today make it all memorable and worthwhile. As we drove back home, having experienced the cool breeze and the scent of rain lingering in the air, I couldn't help more but feel grateful for these precious moments that make life truly special. Until next time please stay safe and try to cherish the little joys that come your way. Thanks for reading me. Have a great time, Bubye
