How Would You Find The Best Deal When Booking A Hotel Room?

The details on what to do and how to go about looking for the best deals varies from product to product.
There are many websites that offer a curated list of items on deals regularly. Whether the products offered on these websites are really worth the buy is questionable given that many of them inflate the prices and then give a huge discount on the inflated price, arriving at a sale price which is usually not very different from its usual price. Inflating the price and giving a discount on it may work for on some buyers but the seasoned shopper isn't going to be taken in by such tactics.
To find a genuine deal needs some skills. Looking for the best deal in booking a hotel room is no different. A site may offer a deal which may look like a dream deal but upon further scrutiny it may turn out to be nothing more than a marketing gimmick.
Does the hotel room look exactly like what has been shown in the website? Are there any hidden charges? Are the extras advertised real? What is the service level? And so on... Guests attach different weight to these subjective criteria depending on their own needs and wants including the length of stay.

I have booked hotel rooms using booking.com and tripadvisor.com and found the latter less reliable. I say less reliable because I noticed that they do not publish negative reviews and even if they do publish upon complaint/request from the merchant they promptly remove it without further investigations. I am not sure whether booking.com does the same.
Having checked the best deals on these sites I will then check with independent review sites such as Trustpilot.com and Sitejabber.com and look for negative reviews, if any, of these merchants offering best deals before confirming my bookings.
