Cultural Sweet Güllaç 👩‍🍳

Hi Steemians,

If we are in Ramadan, it would not be possible without sharing this beautiful delicious dessert. Ramadan has its own flavors. These are dates, pita, gullac and many more beautiful indispensable tastes. As someone who loves dates very much, it is among my indispensables during Ramadan. In this Sharing, I wanted to include our indispensable dessert, Güllac.

Every culture has its own unique dishes and desserts. There are so many delicious flavors in our culture that they are all beautiful. Güllaç is one of these delicious flavors. ☺️ We bought our Güllac in the form of ready-made leaves.

To give a brief information about the history of our Güllac, its oldest recipe goes back to the 13th century. While making Güllaç leaves, it was made by adding water or egg white to wheat starch in the past, today it is prepared with corn starch and water.

First of all, Ali Usta from Kastamonu turns the phyllo dough into dessert by soaking it with sweetened milk. And he offers this dessert to the palace officials. Thanks to this highly acclaimed dessert, Ali Usta takes charge in the palace and becomes the head of the dessert.

Let's move on to explain this beautiful recipe, maybe some of you will try it.

Materials
  • 1 pack of 300 grams of Güllaç
  • 2 liters of milk
  • 500 grams of sugar (2.5 cups)
  • 1 packet of vanilla
  • Butter (optional)
  • Walnut, hazelnut or pomegranate (you can use any fruit you want to decorate, optional)
Preparation of
  • Milk and sugar are put in the pot. Add vanilla and butter to it. Stir and wait for it to boil after the sugar melts.
  • After the milk is boiled, it is kept until it becomes warm. If we pour it over our Güllac before it is warm, it becomes dough and we cannot get the taste we want and expect.

  • The most important point when making Güllaç is that the milk is warm.
  • After warming up, warm milk is poured over each leaf of Güllaç placed on the tray. We cut the gullaç leaves into pieces so that they would fit in my debt. This process is continued until the Güllaç leaves are finished.

  • When the Güllaç leaf is finished, the remaining milk in the pot is poured over the Güllaç. After the process is finished, it is placed in a cool place or refrigerator.

  • When our Güllaç is ready to be served, hazelnuts or walnuts are placed on it to decorate it. We added walnuts to our Güllaç.

  • If you want, you can sweeten it by putting walnuts between the leaves. We can flavor and decorate our gullac by putting pomegranate on it. Our Güllaç is ready to eat with pleasure.

It's such a beautiful, light and delicious dessert. Milk desserts are practical and delicious. I am so glad that we have this fine food culture. I'm one of those people who can't give up sweets even if I gain weight.
Bon appetit to those who will try this beautiful traditional flavor.

One of my favorite desserts. Since it is milky sweet, it does not make you gain too much weight. Taste is amazing. 😋

Thank you so much. I like it, too. It is a special treat because it is made with milk. ☺️

Thank you so much for sharing your recipe of Güllaç with us, @mercy37, and thank you also for this brief historical review. Sometimes the trivia behind traditional desserts can be a lot of fun.

I imagine that each family puts their own particular touch to this dessert, as it happens with all traditional dishes. Perhaps if I made Güllaç , I would decorate it like you, or with pistachio, or orange zest :p It must be so delicious tasting sweet and milky that almost anything would be equally good for decorating. Cheers!

Thank you for your comment. 🤗 Orange zest can be very nice. Imagination is enough to decorate Güllaç. ☺️ It's a very nice and light dessert. One of the most beautiful flavors of Ramadan.
