Why Have I Chosen New Market as My Favorite and How Often I Come Here?

I have chosen New Market because I come here more often than to any other supermarket.

Due to the high cost of gasoline, we try not to use the car too much. We usually come here on the motorcycle and this way, we can't carry a lot of things. So we come once or twice a week. But it can happen that we don't come for two weeks. It depends on our needs and how available we are.

My Shopping list

Today we came for

• onions
• potatoes
• plantains
• sausages
• beer
• paper towels
• sunflower seeds for our pair of parrots
• kibble for our cats

...But we took a couple of other things with us.

About New Market

Today I arrived a little before 6 p.m approximately.

I wanted to take the pictures for the Challenge, and as I travel tomorrow for work, I had to do it today. I wouldn't be able again until Saturday or sunday.

Trucks had just brought in bales of goods and workers were unloading them.

New Market also sells to wholesalers. This is one of the reasons why we can find much more affordable prices here than in other supermarkets in the city.

They open at 8 a.m. and close after 9 p.m. My favorite hours to visit here are 4 p.m and after 7 p.m. because it is less crowded.

As soon as you go past the reception counter, you find another counter. Behind this counter, there are samples of the products that are sold wholesale and their prices. Here you can place your order.

After the wholesale area, you find the first isle of six. Here you can find cornflour, pastas, rice, legumes, etc.

I took one package of harina PAN, my favorite cornmeal.

Below you can see left side of isle 1. Here you can find sesame cream (tahini) and other products used in the city's large Arab community.

Among the products in isle 2, you can find sugar, wheat flour, coffee, and cocoa, among others. I bought sugar; it was not on my list, but I always need to make cakes.

You can see that they hide the prices in dollars under the fake "REF" label, for reference. But it is not a code but the price in dollars; so 1 kg of sugar costs $1.33, just as one kilo of harina PAN. All businesses that want to express product costs in dollars have to do this "camouflage", so as not to break the law. Two monthes ago, you paid $1 or less for these products. Inflation.

But everyone wants to know the price in dollars. That is the truth. So stores make sure to please the customer without having to pay fines.

Down in isle 2, I found the coffee brand I'm using now at home, Anzoátegui. The same: it's 25-30% more expensive than two months ago.

I also found the sunflower seeds for my parrots. Two months ago, I used to pay than $1.75; now is more than $2.3.

In isle 3, you can find canned sardines and tuna, for example. I like this brand better: Margarita, but there is Eveba, too, whic is good.

They have detrgent and other cleaning products. Also products for personall hygene.

Cookies, crackers, and snacks.

We bought these honey crackers which my husband likes.

...And this cereal that makes me feel like a child :)

I bought two tomatoes only. Because they didn't look so good, I only bought two for dinner.

They have pita bread and pizza bases next to the vegetables.

They also sell root vegetables, coconuts, avocadoes, pumpkins, potatos, onions, plantains, bananas...

Alcoholic drinks are in the last isle.

Outside the isles, you can find meats, frozen chicken, charcuterie.

Below you can see the prices.

They also sell bread, seeds and nuts, ice cream, cosmetics, plastics, etc. If you need a sweeping brush, a mop, a bucket, thread for your round roast or hallacas, you'll find those here.

And in the back wall, from left to right, you find the refrigerators and fridges: sodas and beer, chorizo, cheese, some meats and chicken already packaged, etc.

The part you can't see weel in the GIF is below. You'll see I was taking some beers and Caroreña Verano, some sort of carbonated sangria, with 6 alcoholic degrees. By the time I upload this post, I have had one already and I can tell you I didn't like it very much. I prefer the traditional sangria.

New Market is not huge but it's big enough, and I find almost anything I need.

They are open from morning to night.

They have air conditioning.

They take bolivars, USD, credit and debit, and Biopago (governmental paying system).

But there's one thing I don't like. After you pay at the cash register, they go through everything you bought again. They open the bags and check item by item (that's why there are check marks on my receipt every time).

You feel the time passing slowly and you despair at the inefficiency of the system. But that's the way it is. I've been to more refined supermarkets and if it's not one thing, it's another. You can run, but you can't hide. The solution is to take a deep breath.
